In the market for freelander

Hi
As the post says I'm looking for a freelander 2
My budget is 10k but that's the top

I quite like the look of the HSE and XS models

What should I look for in that price range

I'm a bit unsure about what's the best to look at in terms of mileage to years of age and price

For example There are some with lowish miles 86k at 7 years old and some that are 5 years old same Mileage and price is the same

So what's the best to search for

Many thanks in advance

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Baltic Blue

I bought a Freelander from SUV & 4x4 at Thorp Arch Estate near Wetherby. Even if you do not buy one there they usually have a good selection to get a feel for pricing.

I found their prices about average for Freelanders. 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40

Thanks for the reply
I have been to SUV 4x4 place as I work around the corner

I've seen a black xs with 86k 2012 £9975

And a black HSE 82k 2010 £9645

What would your opinion be
Are there any years and models that I should stay away from

I'm not aware of any years or models to stay away from (others more expert might know more) . I would say if you can see a reasonable amount of service history to show regular servicing.

There are a number of problem areas that Freelanders can be afflicted with, there is plenty on this forum but every make/model of car has its own faults and I don't see Freelanders being any better or worse.

Mine had 50k when I bought it in June and now has 61k on it, it is going to need the rear diff (Haldex) serviced soon, about £180 and a service at £150. The headlamp connector also burnt out but only cost about £4 to fix.

I have really enjoyed driving it and it tows our caravan very well. 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40

One other thing, I went for a GS model as I didn't want the sat nav and there was not much difference in spec or comfort. Fewer electronic gizmos to play up! 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40

Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Zermatt Silver

Just for comparison, I bought mine last month, 79k miles 2010 model GS, very good condition at £6,800. HSE would be nicer but £3k extra seems a bit much! Mine has a tow-bar, so perhaps half that £3k is what i’ll need to fork out for a new clutch at some point! Smile 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

10 years or 150,000 miles.

If £10k is your absolute limit, I wonder if it might be better to spend £8k or £9k and then use the rest for preventive maintenance (timing belt, new battery, new tyres etc). 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Seem to be good for small livestock trailers, plenty FL2 + Ifor Williams combos at the mart here on sheep days. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

If you tow I suggest you go for an Auto. The clutch & DMF on the manuals have varying lives from 30K up to over 100K. Reverse is quite high geared. Auto seems made for towing.

If I was choosing between cars with different spec levels/mileages I would always bias my decision towards the youngest car given that a lot of problems with cars can be age related rather than something wearing out mechanically due to mileage. ie cars deteriorate even if you don't use them much.
Other thing to think about is that post 2011 FL2s have DPFs fitted and that early 2011 models had the dreaded hesitation problem (in warmer weather) for which LR never really found a fix.

I am not so sure that is the case anymore due to the move to Personal Contract Hire. Care are turned over and in as the contract comes to an end. Happy to discuss. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
