I bought a Freelander from SUV & 4x4 at Thorp Arch Estate near Wetherby. Even if you do not buy one there they usually have a good selection to get a feel for pricing.

I'm not aware of any years or models to stay away from (others more expert might know more) . I would say if you can see a reasonable amount of service history to show regular servicing.

One other thing, I went for a GS model as I didn't want the sat nav and there was not much difference in spec or comfort. Fewer electronic gizmos to play up! 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40 |

Just for comparison, I bought mine last month, 79k miles 2010 model GS, very good condition at £6,800. HSE would be nicer but £3k extra seems a bit much! Mine has a tow-bar, so perhaps half that £3k is what i’ll need to fork out for a new clutch at some point! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

If you tow I suggest you go for an Auto. The clutch & DMF on the manuals have varying lives from 30K up to over 100K. Reverse is quite high geared. Auto seems made for towing.

If I was choosing between cars with different spec levels/mileages I would always bias my decision towards the youngest car given that a lot of problems with cars can be age related rather than something wearing out mechanically due to mileage. ie cars deteriorate even if you don't use them much.

Remember when you buy a second hand car you are buying someone else's problems.
