Could be a split hose ? As for the mpg it's about right compared to mine with short runs.

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

22mpg on short journeys Shocked

what are you towing? a 15 ton trailer??? Confused

I dont get any lower than average 28mpg round town out of mine and that's at worst case, normally about 30mpg

overall average is about 33mpg, with a long run hitting average 40mpg

I know mine is SD4 Auto but I got similar figures from my TD4 Auto

sounds like you could both have an issue to drop MPG that much.

Re. the fumes under the bonnet, i just had this recently, there is a crankcase breather pipe at the top rear of the engine, runs along the back near the scuttle, it joins a union that vents back into the air intake for the engine.
Mine had come undone and was belching crankcase fumes under the back of the bonnet...

I hadn't noticed to be honest, only use the car at weekends.
It was more the smell that was getting into the cabin and the fumes could be seen in the headlights.
Since reconnecting the hose, no more smell...

On the subject of MPG (I know there is a separate thread for this) I have a 'heavy' Freelander. The spare wheel carrier on the back is VERY heavy (or should that read 'over-engineered), the 'Brick' of a roof top sleeping pod and Off Road tyres ......... this is my MPG

I usually use the LCD in the Range mode. When journeying up to Scotland from the Midlands, the range read 324mls and the trip read 302mls. In reality I got over 600mls to the tank, could have got more, but didn't want to run out of fuel.
Yes I drive at 56-57mph in the slower lanes of the motorway, I am never in a hurry.

Mixed Urban/Long distance I still return over 30mpg. I have the 2.2 diesel manual.

Anyone coming to a FL2 is unfortunately going to get a major shock on fuel. 2.2 diesel ( old school a la Transit ) , heavy car, big rubber footprint and some element of all four of wheels being driven. Chuck in an auto box using very old technology and high MPG will never be an option . Even tyre choice on this vehicle can add/lose 2mpg. On urban commutes 22mpg per Mr Pinks is believable. 28 is my wife’s average. I’ve squeezed a 44 mpg out of the car on 200 miles non stop run, driving like I was in a funeral procession .

Without hanging around in the Subaru I often average over 40. A couple of weeks around town would see that drop to 38, and on Monday a 250 mile drive of mixed motorway and clear A roads saw an indicated 57.5 mpg Thumbs Up

Still the FL2 only does around 4 k a year , and is now down to the point where it probably isn’t actually depreciating so the cost of fuel is just a minor irritation . Crying or Very sad 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

No argument with the fuel consumption. My 2010 TD4 (160) Auto gives me an overall of about 28mpg including a small amount of towing. Use of 2SO has made no difference. Presently using BP Ultimate with minimal improvement, certainly not enough to justify the extra expense.
One point - the 2.2 diesel is NOT anything to do with the Transit. It is a PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) engine designed in cooperation with Ford. That’s as close as it gets.
