Removing the sump plug will only drain approx 3 litres or less, leaving the remaining 4 litres or so in the works and the intercooler. There is a way of changing all the ATF but this involves breaking in to the cooler pipelines & doing a running "fill & drain" but few places have the specialist kit. I have done it by the basic drain & refill method, diluting the original old ATF by 3 litres each time. LR dealers do it the same way.

If you are serious about doing the rear diff properly why not drill and tap a hole in the flat section designed for a drain plug and fit a drain plug.

I use one for working on the cars. It saves scrabbling about the ground, getting base plates off, fighting with stuck sump plugs and worrying about leaks afterwards. I've been told it can leave dregs and general debris on the bottom of the sump, but I've never had a problem. I believe I got mine from Screwfix in the UK:

Thats a Pela Oil Extractor - theyve been around for years and available from various sources for about £40 Originally designed for marine applications where you had no access to a sump plug. Ive got one and have found it very useful at times. Jules |
