Violent forward jolt when coming off the break in traffic

Hi Im a newbie - I have had my FL2 since May and it's a 2012 SD4 auto.

When I first drove it to London I was in traffic and after 20 minutes or so in traffic as I lifted of the break to edge forward I felt like I had been hit from behind by another car. I have no idea what it is but it continues to do this if I have been sitting in traffic for a while with my foot on the break. I am very curious to know if anyone else has this issue?

Many thanks in advance.

Mike

Italy 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 S Auto Stornoway Grey

Hello Denver,

I have a MY2011 SD4 and sometimes this 'strange' behaviour happens also to my car. When I'm stuck for some minutes in the traffic in 'D' auto box position and I release the brake pedal, the car 'jumps' forward immediatelly or hesitate for one or two seconds before to do it.
I guess this issue comes from the auto gearbox. I have explained this problem to my official dealer, and I drove with his mechanic for some kilometers, but the problem has not happened.
The strangest thing is that the problem comes and then disappear itself. Until a true breakdown or an explanation, I will go through with this bother.

Cheers,

Paolo. MY11 SD4 S

Hi Paulo,
Thanks for your response - that is exactly the behavior I am experiencing. I haven't bothered taking it to the dealer yet for the reason that it is so intermittent and sod's law says that I won't be able to reproduce the problem. It can be a real jolt though almost like clunking gearbox but more aggressive.

Cheers

Mike

When Mike Brewer buys a car with such a fault on Wheeler Dealers, telling the owner it needs a new gearbox and will cost thousands, all they do is fit a new filter and gasket and its cured for a tenner, Laughing maybe an oil and filter change might help yours?

Is it not one of those sealed for life boxes?

These boxes (especially the later models) have a system that reduces drag when sat idling in gear. I suspect what you're feeling is that system releasing and giving you full drive. If it really is that harsh then I would first try getting a full oil change and see what difference that makes.

Although I didn't have any problems with my current car, when I bought it, it had done 10K since the last service, so I took it to my local indy and got them to go front to back changing ALL the fluids. I like to know where I am with things. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

There's one or two treads on the forum about this. My car (2013) does this also. There's a software update available that is supposed to cure the issue. Some thing to do with the EGR valve I think. My car is due a service next month and after speaking with the mechanic I use he is going to check if the update has been done. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

2013MY Auto. I had exactly the same experience as it felt like someone had hit me from behind. That was the words I used "been hit from behind".

Some months later and with three official Land Rover reconditioned Haldex units replaced and one brand new factory Haldex unit most recently the thump has gone. The faulty Haldex units had nothing to do with it apparently. The dealer loaded either new software or reloaded it and the thump has gone.

Read this thread, it mentions the software update.

Auto gearbox/Haldex fix

My car developed exactly the same problem at 5 years old. The car would lurch forward when taking my foot off the brake after being stationary. This would happen if running in slow traffic, stop start, or on long journeys where the car was getting hot. I put it into the dealer and they couldn't find any fault codes to indicate a problem with the gearbox. We then agreed to flush and change the oil in the Haldex unit, even though it's supposed to be a sealed for life unit. This solved the problem completely and that was done 6 months ago without a hint of it returning so far.

Jumping from start in traffic

I have the same problem with my 2012 sd4. When hot in traffic after about 10 min stop start otherwise work ok. my old td4 did not have this problem.

Anyone know why if you jack up one back wheel on a 2009 td4 you need a bar to turn the wheel but on my 2012 sd4 the wheel turns freely they both supposed to have the Hadley gen 4 rear units
