The FL2 has 17 inch rims with 235/65/R17 tyres

As I am now stuck with a set of near perfect 225/45/R17 Winter tyres could you fit them ? Is it legal ? How would it drive ?  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

The winter tyres have a much smaller rolling circumference - which will set your speedometer out by 14%.
So besides looking awful IMO , the actual speed will be greatly reduced in each gear .
eg at 60 mph on the speedo you will only be doing 51mph.

Good advice from Jules, also consider the permissible tyre loading should be the same as a minimum.

If you look around on any evenings drive through a town it will not be too hard to see " Yoofs " running their cars on " stretched tyres" . It's quite the thing to do in certain circles for the " go-kart wheel look " . Whilst you can fit tyres of differing size [within reason] the difference on those is too great.

The sidewalls would be 515mm shorter than your originals [that's just over 2" in your old money ]

Dump them, or use them for fenders on your retirement yacht.  FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

A significant change in the rolling circumference would also confuse the DSC systems of the car, probably enough to void your insurance

I have no experience to back that up but its a valid point that has been raised before.


get a one man band 'man with a van tyre fitter' to sort it out for you and he may take your wrong tyres in part ex.

ps. 515mm difference is major, if you fit them you wont need a step ladder to climb aboard anymore  At work

A friend of mine bought some chunky but cheap alloys and tyres off ebay for his LandCruiser which looked really good. Then he discovered that the wheels were a lot thicker that his originals and his wheel bolts wouldn't reach the hubs properly. Six special bolts per wheel times four = 24 bolts at just over £8 each = about £200  3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
