DIY Service

Just given my TD4e a 'B' service,

New fuel filter, pollen filter oil filter, oil change etc.

I was really apprehensive about the fuel filter change (priming etc) but needn't have worried. The oil filter is a bit of a pig to do though. That thread seems to go on for ever!

Can't quite beat the satisfaction of doing this kind of thing yourself. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Well done mate.

You get a 27mm flex head ratchet ring spanner for the oil filter?

I used a 27mm socket and cut half an inch off using my saw as I was in a rush at the time bit it has seen me through two more changes since.

Well done BTW Phil. I had trouble getting mine started after changing the fuel filter but got it going in the end thanks to the forum.

You don't need to prime the fuel filter if you are quick to cap the fuel lines, particularly the tank-> filter line to prevent fuel running back down the pipe. Mahle supply 4 correctly sized male/female caps with their fuel filter to do this (which I've retained for future use) but it's mainly that one line that needs doing. Then just fill the filter up with diesel and fires straight up.

Yup, sure did. The thread on the filter cap goes on forever though! 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

That was my worry. After seeing the YouTube video of those guys who didn't prime the filter and having to bleed the lines, not for me!

That tip of de1979's looks like the solution though. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

I plug the tank line and use a hand primer (bulb type) to fill the filter when it is in place. I've not had any issues but the first time changed my filter I had sphincter puckering issues before fired it up, I need not have worried.

I used to change the diesel filter every 2nd service but now I've decided to only do it once per year, same with the pollen filter. I do air and oil filters every 4 months with the oil change (usually around 15,000Kms).

Did the timing belt a few weeks back when I hit 150,000km, s and I'm about to do gearbox, transfer case, Haldex and diff. Brake flex lines too.

I drive 100kms round trip for work each day and then some. The FL2 gets a work out for sure. I plan on ditching it in a few years for something else but not sure what yet.

YB, you have any suggestions?

Nothing is good value for money now in the LR stable. Our FL2 is very safe at the moment but will be keen to see what happens with the new Defender. Let the mad scramble happen and then work out if its trash or not. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Saw a couple of Volvo XC60 ads on TV recently, I haven't had a look at one but isn't it basically the same car? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Volvo XC60 (up to 2016) is built on the same 'Ford' platform as the FL2.

Quote from Wikipedia

Manufactured by subsidiary Volvo Car Gent in Ghent, Belgium, the first generation XC60 is based on Volvo's P3 platform and the XC60 shares technology with the Land Rover Freelander of 2007. At the time of development, both Land Rover and Volvo were owned by Ford and development was split between the two subsidiaries. Much of the engineering and tuning of this CUV was done by Volvo in Sweden, although offroad capabilities were done at Land Rover in England. The project director for the XC60 was Lars Blenwall.

PS just remembered, I thought the Ghent Factory produced the 'charming?' little DAF 'Daffodil', one of the first little CTV cars, it was noisy, underpowered and to my mind, dreadful. The original had 22hp, but the later 30hp version was quicker and could achieve 0 - 50 mph in 29 secs.
I was wrong, yes the car was bad, but it was made in Eindhoven.
