In the 3 years I've owned my TD4 I've never floored it and rued the lack of performance. The only difference I can tell between my TD4 and an SD4 I regularly drive is noise, and that's probably all down to better baffling in the later car.

Well, I've certainly noticed it going from a TD4 FL2 to a SD4 Evoque. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I would definitely advise the SD4. MUch better pick up and oodles of torque, never need to go into sport mode.

So IMHO i'd go for the SD4 auto

There are several really good LR tuning specialists.

Alive - http://www.alivetuning.com/

Bell Auto Services - BAS https://bellautoservices.co.uk/

to name just 2.

Ive had 3 TD4s and now a SD4 auto - the SD4 is a much more enjoyable drive IMO.

Better pick up , and smoother/faster acceleration - slightly worse mpg. Jules

Due to differences in engine mechanicals the TD4 can be chipped to produce the same power and torque maximums however the result may not be as smooth or the same power torque curves across the range or the same fuel consumption. LR did not spend money fitting a different turbo and other bits if a simple re-chip would have sufficed, the SD4 in the FL2 is always auto, there was no manual option, there was in the Ewok but that has a lighter body so perhaps the manual box is near its maximum power limits. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I disagree with the above. Look properly at the tuning companies above. They do not chip. They rewrite the ECU programme properly and have huge experience.

I would not advise any plug in chip

As Dartman says above, if all that is required was for the ECU to be rewritten, why didn't Land Rover do that or are you suggesting that some tuning companies have more experience than Land Rover? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

A very good question. Like many manufacturers I suspect LR produce products for the average user and the demand for emotive 'mine is biggers than yours' approach. To do that they provide two FL2 tunes for the average user in Europe and it is well known that they have a ROW [rest of world] tune for some of their vehicles to cope with the variety of conditions in different countries.

When the Defender was going out of production the increased the standard 122bhp tune to 140bhp using the same engine and turbo etc. These tuning companies do exactly the same thing and having used both they want to know how you will use the vehicle, how it will be driven and then they work with you to develop the correct BHP curve and torque curves. Do you want a racer, economy, torque for towing etc etc. They can sell you a standard tune from their range or a specific one which is tested on a rolling road.

I have had many tunes over the years from several tuning companies and non of them have been a chip. A chip is the cheats way to tune, a proper ECU map is a totally different thing and if you choose well you get a superb experience.

When my son worked in Zambia about five years ago his company had some "new" Defenders which had very little electronics in them and were obviously specially produced for that market, not even sure if the engine was different. Similarly when he set up operations in Botswana he went into a Toyota dealers and ordered 5 new pickups and they were old technology (not even electric fans) but totally bulletproof from a reliability point of view. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

What don't you understand about a chip, that is a new program, the question is who does it and how much is a complete remap of the ECU, chip is just a generic term for a modified program be it some changes or a completely new program. The Defender was always mapped for its use whether it needed 140bhp is probably moot, basically when you are charging £75 grand plus for a car a bit more bhp makes it seem more reasonable. The Defender engine and the TD4 are the same except for the chip program or map, the SD4 isn't, it may be interesting to know that though the Ewok and the FL2 have the same power and torque figures for the SD4 whether the Ewok manual has the same map as the auto version my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
