The oil filter is directly behind the front grille (fender), but very difficult to access. Forget any work from the top, you can only get to the oil filter from the botton. Remove the metal engine protection shield and ask someone with very thin arms to squeeze between water cooler and fender to unscrew the filter top. A long wrench will be helpful.

Just seen this post - sorry for delay. Yeah I've just done two oil and filter changes - my FL2 and my Dad's. what an absolute pain in the Censored .

I swear LR decsigned it so we'd have to take it to them for all maintenance. It is very awkward to get to, but I used a 27mm socket, and adjustable wrench. You can do this from the top of the engine initally, but you need to ensure you have a short socket, as otherwise the wrench gets pushed against the radiator fan in no time. Do as much as you can from this angle and then move below the engine, by removing the metal guard.

The six metal bolts holding the metal guard will have probably rusted in place like mine and take a bit of persuasion to get off. When refixing, apply copper grease to the bolts. I then used a regular metal band typre oil wrench to lossen the filter until it was easy enough to remove by hand. Be careful not to use any excessive force though as the oil filter housing is plastic. The filter is fixed into the housing and you need a pair of long nose pliers to release it, which is self explanatory when you get the filter off. Renew the filter and seal and then reapply. Also after draining the main sump, renew the metal washer to ensure a decent seal.

Long winded Iknow, but hope it helps

I Forgot to ask whether anyone is aware of the specialist tool LR use to remove the oil filter? I've heard there is one in existance, but it'll set you back £600!!! If LR have intentionally made changing the oil and oil filter difficult what is the point of doing the job yourself Question
It will certainly cost you lots of time and there is a chance you may f Censored up the filter holder or one of the rusted screws Rolling Eyes

Me thinks - if you can afford to buy the beast you should be able to afford to service it as well Rolling Eyes Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I agree. I do have it serviced at LR, but I intend to keep the car for a long time so I change the oil and filter between services. Always have done on all my cars. I know there's arguments for and against changing between services, but I've always favoured the 'for'. Costs me £40.00 to do it, so I save £100.00 over having it done at LR. It is a difficult job, but hey, everyone likes a challenge! LR will have to get up early to stop me from doing a bit of DIY mechanic work!! I've changed the oil & oil filter twice before the 1st service.

It's not too difficult - just work from the bottom up, and remember that you need to keep the oil filter case (which is plastic).

No way am I going to fanny about at the dealers - when I can do it myself Thumbs Up

The engine is designed for Peugeot, Citreon and Land Rover, it was developed for all three models so they havent just got someone eles's engine and chucked it in. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. That's true, but when you try to do any maintenance, it seems as though it was chucked in! Shocked Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

I just removed the metal skid plate, directly below the engine - there are 6 bolts. Here you access the oil drainage plug also. To remove the plastic oil filter cover, I just used a small set of adjustable grips - that I gripped on to the plastic nut at the tip of the filter cover. I didn't have to remove the plastic shield at the front of the engine bay.

Hope that helps Thumbs Up
