Does anyone know if the in tank transfer pump runs continuously when the ignition is on or just when needed due to imbalance of fuel in tank. Turn off your TV turn on your brain

Not a lot of info in the manual but it is low pressure:

Fuel charging is achieved with a LP and HP fuel system.

The LP fuel system comprises: Saddle type fuel tank Tank mounted fuel delivery module and integral transfer pump Fuel supply and return lines Filter and water separator assembly.

The HP fuel system comprises: HP fuel pump with integral mounted lift pump and Volume Control Valve (VCV) Common fuel rail with integral PCV and pressure sensor 4 piezo-injectors HP connecting pipes Fuel leak-off pipes.  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Cheers for answer just wandered as mine seems to have been running even with ignition off ( flat battery after a couple of days). So garage have fitted a relay into the 12v feed wire controlled off an ignition live, so the pump will run as long as the ignition is on. Just wondered if it was supposed to run for a long time. Suppose if you run around with less than a 1/4 of a tank of fuel it would be running all the time anyway. Turn off your TV turn on your brain

It is a saddle tank with two fuel level sensors. The fuel is drawn from the right hand tank by the high pressure fuel pump (suction!). As the system notes the imbalance, the left hand tank will remain full as the right hand tank drains, it operates the LP fuel pump to balance the tanks.
What you see on the fuel gauge is the average of the two tanks.

The fuel pump running on suggests that the left hand level sensor is reading high, or that the fuel pump is struggling to transfer the fuel - there was a service bulletin many years ago with regard to kinked internal tank fuel pipes.

level sensors have been known to fail, or even hang up internally - been over any high jumps lately

Sounds as if you have a decent garage anyway to give you that workaround.

I tend to fuel to brim as I am not passing fuel stations daily so never considered what balance pump is doing but its an odd design if its a live circuit 24/7. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

It should not be running 24/7 but it seems by what I can find on the net that the in tank pump should run with the ignition is on (that was my initial question) Mine was running 24/7 the garage have had to fit a ignition controlled relay so it stops running when ignition is off. It seems the fuel pump relay is inside the foot well fuse box and may be soldered to the circuit board. Turn off your TV turn on your brain
