My own stupid fault for buying it privately. Shes a 08 plate with 80k on it and has FSH.. in the first couple of weeks the 4 wheel drive went. Thanks to Austen (life saver) she had to have a new haldex, module and pump. Intercooler went a few weeks later, replaced that as well as air con unit. Total of about £850 in work so far within 4 months!

Now I was thinking, yippee now all is ok!

Or not.. when driving up steep hills I can smell a awful clutch smell, I've towed 3 times and on the last time towing up a hill it smelt worse than ever but only up a hill. Today drove out of work, 10 mins drive to walk the dog, up a hill (not even steep but a long hill) and the smell of clutch was chronic by the time I stopped to walk the dog.

Any known problems with the clutch on the FL2? Clutch is mid way when driving, doesn't slip either..  FL2 GS

yes there are lots of known problems with the FL2 Manual clutch/flywheel/slave cylinder.

although normally this is indicated by the vibrations through the pedal and floor (dual mass flywheel on its way out) or by slipping in 6th, then 5th shortly after, then 4th etc.. (clutch slipping on its way out)

whilst your having one replaced its common sense to have it all replaced costing about £700 - £1200 depending on where you go.

burning clutch smell is not normally an indicator of problems as far as im aware, but at 80k on the clock, if its had a hard life towing, then its about right for a clutch to start going (no matter what car it is). This is why its recommended that if your going to be towing a lot or off roading, then the auto is the better option by a long shot.

If oil is on the clutch make sure you find that source as well and repair at same time. One hopes you are bottoming it all out. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

its all relative to what you paid for the car in the first place, cheap cars are generally cheap for a reason.....

but as yours is slightly low mileage for its age, if the price you paid for it was slightly lower than average then by spending this money on it now (however painful it may be) is most likely money well spent for the future. You should end up with a reliable solid motor to tow your trailer and everything else you want to do with it.

As you will have to get it repaired anyway I would keep the car as you will have had two of the major problems sorted, no guarantee that nothing else will happen though. Common sense isn't very common.
