Getting back on topic: Having just been away for 34 days, leaving my FL2 locked on the drive, I returned to find it would not respond to either keyfob. I got in via the passenger door using an emergency key, the alarm instantly sounded. Inserting a keyfob silenced the alarm and the car then started immediately with ease. After this, both keyfobs worked normally. My conclusions: The car does indeed enter a sleep mode which is a battery saving feature. Tuning off the receiver electronics, among other none-essentials will help prevent total car battery discharge during long periods of standing. This makes sense to me. The time period appears to be around 30 days, based on my own and other's experiences. Neither the car's battery nor the keyfobs' batteries were in a discharged state. The issue was normal intentional behaviour by the car's electronics. Storing 2 keyfobs in close proximity will almost certainly have no detrimental effect. They are transmitters, not transceivers so will not detect RF from each other, not withstanding the fact that they only transmit when a button is pressed. The keyfobs do indeed get charged when docked - we've always known that - but the charge method would not prevent storing keyfobs together either. It is likely an induction coil around the dock which induces charge current in a core/coil within the fob. |

This happened to me yesterday for the first time (I will have owned the car for 2 years from new in December 09) however the difference being I had pulled up at a petrol station, locked the car, went into pay, and then on the way out I could not unlock the car (the car was left for no longer than 3 / 4 minutes) - I had to open the car with the key, sounding the alarm. Inserting the fob stopped the alarm and the fob worked fine there after...

Sounds like interference from Mr Volvos car fob as this happens to me if my wireless garage alarm is triggered when I unlock the car until I am out of it's range Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis |

Car remotes use deregulated radio frequencies, often 433MHz or 868MHz. The same frequencies are used for countless other applications: garage door control/gate control/home automation/doorbells etc. etc. You can imagine how there might be 'collision' with other users since there's millions of us. The guy with the Volvo may have been repeatedly/continuously pressing buttons. Your FL2 will probably 'hear' his transmission but ignore it since the code/data structure is incorrect, however, while the radio receiver in the car is 'listening to' that, it can't clearly listen to your keyfob.

I once owned a 3-litre Ghia Ford Capri without all the modern electrical “bobs & bits”, and that never let me down ever. But who on earth wants to go back to those dark days My life’s employment has been with the electronic design industry and say that the more electronic wizardry in cars the better. There will be more exciting developments to come in the future, like electronic steering (no mechanical connection between steering wheel and wheels), wireless electrical connections (no more wiring harness) and electronic choice of exterior colour (to suit your mode of the day). Sounds fantastic to me and not that far off either. Let’s hope LR get their electronic sums right otherwise we may meet each other in a roadside ditch somewhere 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof. I have just returned after 4 weeks having left the FL2 locked in the drive. The car would not respond to the key and I had to gain admission using the key.
