Jonp I get over 40 mpg on a run but like all cars short trips are not cheap trips. Shocked FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I agree but even my old 2.5Tdi VW Transporter with 257000 miles on the clock still returns 38mpg around town! Whilst I love the comfort of the Freelander 2 the mpg is really no where near as good as is so often claimed. Mine is going in for a full service soon with a good Independent LR specialist so I am just hoping that will improve things! If not I will look into finding someone reputable to 'chip it' for better mpg which is not something I like to do but 28mpg is not good!

Outside Air Temp?

I'm afraid that I have not read through all 49 pages of this topic but I find that the outside air temperature has a big effect on mpg - the higher the temp the better the mpg.
Difference on a regular 150 mile run between winter and summer can be as much as 7mpg.
But, the biggest effect is driving style. Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

The last time we were able to buy fuel by the gallon was donkeys years ago and the gallon has gone for ever so why does the readout still give MPG when it would be so much more sensible to use the units we buy fuel in and give miles per 5 or 10 litres.

Many reasons. The Imperial Gallon (as opposed to the US Gallon) is our long established liquid measure. Miles per Gallon is the UK established rule. To measure consumption in litres would require us to also change the miles to kilometres as in Km/litre. Nothing wrong with it, but, shall I say, it is not British!
This thread, I predict, will run and run with all manner of opinions!

It wouldn't, as we could use miles per litre. Nothing wrong with it, but, shall I say, it is not British! Ah yes, that old way of thinking that has so often held us back and still does. Much of British is superb and best but simply to stubbornly stick to something just because it is British even if it is inconsistent and outdated is incomprehensible.

I agree, this thread will run with all manner of opinions and the above is mine which I hope will be respected as I respect others.

I think we are all interested to drive as far as we can on a given quantity of fuel.

You can show litres/100kms so single figures are best Thumbs Up driving on the right side

I’ve got a 67 plate DS 2.0 Ingenium Diesel auto, for a few days, while the FFRR is having a couple of snags sorted.

Despite it’s aerodynamic (but much less practical) shape and it’s new engine (replacing the “unfashionable” 2.2), it’s absolutely no more economical (31-32mpg) than my last and in my view, much nicer, FL2 SD4 auto Shocked Come to think of it, it’s only around 4-5mpg better than the SDV8 in the FF Shocked

Surely, there has to be something that’s improved? I haven’t found it yet...

First long run with Freelander, 4 on board with full roofbox and boot filled with hillwalking and climbing gear and recorded 38.9 tank to tank on West of Scotland roads, well pleased

Are the people on this thread quoting actual tank to tank mpg or that shown on dash board.
Likewise, are the speeds quoted from the car speed display or from a more accurate GPS.
I find the car is about 5% optimistic on both, and that makes a lot of difference when you combine the two.

In my experience the SD4 averages about 33 mpg actual (measured tank to tank), which reads about 34.5 mpg on the trip computer. (over about 5 years)
The best I have seen over any distance is about 40 mpg cruising about 60 mph (GPS) on a motor way.

This seems quite acceptable to me, as I cruise along in comfort. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

I use fuelly to do my mpg as a lot do. I have not seen more 24mpg yet over a tank in the 2 months of owning the car. This is on par with previous 11 td4 auto, i now have the sd4. However this is all town (and a hilly town at that) driving and about what I would expect from a car with the aerodynamic qualities of a brick and 2 tons of weight.
In my previous TD4, on a run the record was 36mpg, all motorway at 56-60mph. I would expect the same from the SD4.

All that said I did not buy a LandRover because it was economical.... Smile
