Iced Snow and a slight slope ......

Don't mix when you park your car on them and get out leaving just the hand brake on Embarassed

Just got back from the shops and parked on a little slope out side the office, got out, it wasn't very slippy even in leather souled work shoes

Got to the office door and started to hear a SSHHSHHHH noise behind me

turn round to see my car sliding slowly to a small wall 6ft in front of it Shocked rear wheels locked up and the fronts rotating

Did a 15ft dash back to my car, unlocking as i went and jumped on the brake pedle stopping the car about 1ft away from the wall (now i think a 15ft dash in work shoes in 1.2574sec's is a new world record Bow down )

reversed car up and put in gear as well and the car didn't move then, but thought it was best to move it to the now vacant spot that i had early in the day were the snow/ice has melted Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

thing is i always leave my handbrake and engine in gear, for some reason, waving at my accountant, i didn't this time.

For that split second, i remember thinking that shouldn't be moving Laughing but i had reactions quicker than Billy the Kidd drawing my key to unlock the door with pin point press of the button

Now if i had press the wrong button, i might have whole different story with my headlights lighting the way into a small wall and beyond Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Another advantage to having an Auto then.

P=transmission locked + handbrake= no slide??
Wink

Although if if your tyres are warm enough I have had a car initially stay put only 2 mins later for the melted ice to re-freeze and the car go down hill gracefully Rolling Eyes

i always park in gear, from when i was taught, i don't think they do that anymore. But i have noticed a number of reports of some cars with self releasing handbrakes, so see no reason to change the habit.

Glad you got it stopped Thumbs Up
I'm the other way, driving what I do most of the time, I don't generally use a handbrake (mine has a silly pedal contraption that's rarely used - just pop it into P) so I've caught myself getting out of the fl a few times, having not put the handbrake on and on a couple of occasions, with it in neutral Embarassed
Like most folk, when not being an abscent minded Censored , its always left in gear. I had an Escort as a kid. Parked it on the drive, locked it and walked 10 yards away when there was a loud bang from behind and the car started to follow me down the path. Took some acrobatics I couldn't manage now, to hold the car back, whilst unlocking the door and banging it into gear. Handbrakes are never to be trusted.
I did wonder which wheels the FL2 locks in gear - are the rears also locked or does the rear diff disengage when the engines off? 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

In San Francisco don't they have a law that obligates all drivers to turn their steering wheels towards the kurb when parked? Should stop most cars from running away.

I had a 55 reg Renault Espace that had an electric hand brake (similar to a Disco 3) but it also turned it's self on when you pressed the engine stop button-which was really useful, the problem being if I drove my old FL1 I would often turn engine off and jump out only to see it roll off into the bushes Embarassed
