United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Loire Blue

Unfortunately Bob, I do remember the tiger in the tank. I think the fuel this time was more akin to a male lion after feeding time !!

Don't know how the mpg differs between models but obviously the driving style is a major factor. Whilst my cruising speed is quite high, I don't floor the throttle to get there. LR Freelander 2 2014 metropolis SD4 auto in Loire Blue.

I agree that driving style makes a massive difference, but there are so many other factors at work. One which I rarely see mentioned is wind direction. Driving into a 10 mph headwind is massively different to a 10 mph tailwind. Then look at the elevation of where you are travelling from and too. Are you going up or downhill overall?

I think it is quite normal to record different mpg's for the same journey, but travelling in a different direction

Wind speed and direction can make a very significant different to fuel consumption and performance as can other factors such as temperature and humidity etc. and then if you add in other factors such as traffic and congestion mpg goes haywire. I often do the same journey several times a day, once during the school run time where the mpg is in single figures compared with 30ish at other times.

Back to wind speed; in a previous life as a pilot wind speed was a critical factor. If you have a 10 mph head wind then you have to do 10 mph just to keep still but if it is a tail wind you have a "free" 10 mph, so wind speed and direction is critical to calculating fuel needs. Although it does not apply so much to internal combustion engines (but stick a standard diesel engine up a high mountain and it can struggle) the effect of air temperature, humidity, altitude and air pressure have a huge effect on jet engines so much that engines that give massive power in their design environment can struggle to make take-off speed, handle like a drunken pig on the ground and drink fuel.

Driving style also makes a big difference in fuel consumption. Some drivers who do not accelerate hard or drive at high speeds don't achieve the same mpg as those who drive more efficiently and have greater anticipation. As somebody once said "The accelerator pedal is a device for wasting the fuel you have just purchased and the brake pedal is a device for wasting the fuel you have just used".

My first proper trip in the two weeks of owning my 2013 xs
from wirral to santa pod and back, thats about 350 miles
5 adults in the car, on the way there 39.6 mpg
on the way back 40.1mpg, we stopped at services to do a driver change and emerged into 20 miles of a 50 mph limit on the motorway, I was driving and at the end of the 20 miles the average speed for that section was 45mph and the average mpg was 52mpg!!!
total average 39.9mpg, im not sure if im impressed or not, I need to experiment with different speeds etc, im not bothered if a 200 mile journey takes 30 mins longer for a 10mpg gain

I've noticed that cruise control at 50mph gets more than 10mpg more than cruise at 70mph, I'm just going to start setting off half an hour earlier on every journey, ha

Wales 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Mauritius Blue

Well the first work trip to Essex and back (from Bridgend, South Wales, total some 420 miles) in my SD4 XS resulted in a lie-o-meter reading of 43.9mpg, not sure how far of reality that is (not refueled yet) but this is the highest I've seen to date (previous best of around 40mpg on a run to the British Motor Museum (Gaydon) and back a few weeks ago.
For a cruise set 70 where possible and allowing for the usual slow M25 and M4 times I'm more than happy enough with the figure, I don't expect it to match my old Hyundai i30 CRDi after all.
And as I am sure you will agree the Freelander certainly a nice long distance cruiser Smile

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver

We've had the Freelander for 6 years now. Considering the size and weight of the car and automatic transmission and ( it's a big and) the Pirelli All Terrain tyres driven through the Haldex 4WD system I think that the MPG isn't that bad. It's never going to deliver anything major. I have three sets of consumption that hardly ever vary. My wife using it for a week locally will get 28 mpg, if I take it for a 25 mile run up into the Dales involving mixed urban, dual carriageway, and country roads it will be 32/34., long motorway trip 40/42. That's on an 09 160 engine. Yes it's a shock if you came from a car and it's certainly " Old School" mileage, but here's the thing, how many other cars can do what a Freelander can do , last few weeks week I used it to ferry chainsaws, hand tools , 300 kg loads of postcrete sacks, fencing wire cools etc, up and down the steepest lane on the Tour de Yorkshire route , into the fields , parked it on steep grassy hills. And it did it without a complaint. According to the trip meter that little lot saw a princely 17mpg Rolling with laughter

It's certainly not a car to do the school run or rush hour crawl in, but after a Defender it's positively thrifty. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Just confirmed my trip calculated 43.7 mpg (by the time I got to the garage) as an actual 41 mpg - Happy enough with this Very Happy

Certainly better than the usual 32 - 35 mpg I get on the more local running about.

If I am driving normally I've got 41.5 from my TD4 but it has had a monster remap.
My short drive to work gets it down but overall average is 37 MPG Big Rich

Mine is doing this! It never changes no matter how I drive. At the moment it is lying like a cheap Chinese watch! It is showing 32mpg whilst a fill and refill have shown a shocking mpg of only 28mpg!!! I bought this thinking they are supposed to return 40mpg on a run and mid 30s around town. Yes I know, you can all get off the floor laughing now! Big Cry Big Cry

My trip won't go above 29 mpg... fairly short runs, auto. A little disappointed as my 110 td5 defender returns the same!
