England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Kosrae Green
DPF - How often to ReGen?

So now I'm (so happily) retired there's no longer a daily burn on M-ways, just a monthly longish run to visit the younger degeneration. That leaves lots of daily short trips of about 5 minutes. Common sense says the XS has to go, but I still love her and she's been a dream for 6 years (yes it does have dpf). I'm happy to put up with a 20 minute maintenance m-way run every couple of weeks just to keep it going, if that's what it takes.
Anyone had experience of how often a re-gen is needed when normal use is local runs only?

We have had two cars with dpf's doing similar journeys - TDI Golf and Evoque. The Golf used to regen now and then but never noticed anything with the Evoque. Why not just wait and see? If any lights come up, take it for a blast then. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Firenze Red

Looks like the late models are carboning up to me. I would blast it at some point in a month and use best fuel you can get hold of.

Jusy off now to try and get mine sorted, Big Cry FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
FL2 MY13 TD4 GS Current

Germany 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Stornoway Grey

I have SE diesel automatic with DPF (German model all have one), my work is 8 km of city drive each way and so far had no problems with the DPF (almost 2 years now), once a month it goes on the highway.
until today i never felt it is going to regen mode, maybe previous owner done something to it, i dont know.
I am using 2SO as additive, maybe it is helping to keep her running good.

How can we tell that the DPF is regenerating?

England 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Santorini Black

Every now and then I get a hot exhaust type smell I put it down to the regen process never had a message come up though and I do a lot of short journeys. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

Stop global winging.

When I did a Landrover Experience in a FL2 (quite a few years ago now) I asked about this, as their cars only do short journeys. The answer was that they hadn't had problems since they started using premium grade fuel. Maybe this would be a good precaution if you only do short journeys.
I know the ingenium is a new and very different engine, but the expected regen on them is around 250 miles. Excerpt from TOPIx:
Active regeneration starts when the particulate loading of the DPF reaches a threshold as monitored or determined by the DPF control software. The threshold calculation is based on driving style, distance travelled and back pressure signals from the differential pressure sensor.
Active regeneration generally occurs every 250 miles (400 km) although this is dependant on how the vehicle is driven. For example, if the vehicle is driven at low loads in urban traffic regularly, active regeneration will occur more often. This is due to the rapid build-up of particulates in the DPF than if the vehicle is driven at high speeds when passive regeneration will have occurred.
Afraid I don't know if the system is the same for FL2 but I imagine they are similar. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
