Demise of diesel?

So what are we going to do when the diesel ban comes in? I wonder what plans JLR are making at the moment to bring out petrol versions of their vehicles for the urban chelsea tractor/school run brigade who will be most affected? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Yes it will be interesting to see how JLR deal with this. Some other manufacturers have a more balanced 'fleet' which offers choices.

However I read something interesting the other day which said by the end of 2017 most new diesels on sale will be Euro 6 compliant which is by all standards pretty clean. The article made the argument that the Uk needs a mix of vehicles, if we all went to petrol C02 would rocket and be far worse for the environment. They argue modern diesels are needed and if you drive an older diesel outside of the city there is no major harm being done. I suspect all this hype will fall back in time as we realise 13 million cars are not about to be scrapped overnight!

As the these later cars offer much more cleaner emissions (on paper) we will be encouraged to dump our old tech cars (not very old cars). BUT !

The but is that these cleaner diesel engines are chocking up with carbon and the knock on effect is going to be a greater carbon footprint keep them on the road. Meanwhile the car industry creams it. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

The biggest cause of pollution in towns is the poor traffic management systems they have. In Southampton, our local town, you spend more time sat still at traffic lights than you do moving. You can often have a green light but cannot go because the next one on is still at red. Don't worry, as soon as most have changed from diesel they will find another reason for another change. As Jack Frost said "just another reason to shaft us. Of course the energy and therefore pollution caused from building new cars gets forgotten about. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

My daughter lives in rural Victoria Oz.
People there have a big SUV ("Utes" ) kitted out for the bush and wayword kangaroos, cars with big V8, and smaller SUVs like the Honda HRV. 99% are petrol.
The interesting thing is that diesels are on the rise over there now as fuel prices are on the up.

Finances drive the buying public - pollution is secondary consideration for most people. Jules

That's one of the reasons I have decided to keep my 2008 GS, not too many toys to go wrong and still does what I want from a car. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

Saw a heavily disguised very quiet ELECTRIC LR in the car park at Eastnor today. That's where it's heading, although I don't see it as feasible over any distance. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I thought there were petrol versions of many cars (including LR) which are not imported due to our stupid tax rules. The i6 was common enough abroad as is the v8 petrol D4. Nice Sad 1978 Laverda Jota. Stolen...
