Why I am driving Freel2 rather than Disco4

Disco 4 looks slightly more attractive than Freelander 2. However, I've adopted Freelander as our new family member since 2013. It was because....

1. It was cheaper

2. It was more fuel efficient (less tax as well)

3. Seems much easier to park

4. Less function, Less trouble (e.g. air suspension)

5. Dapper driving (lighter and smaller)

6. Prefer a proper gear stick to a dial gear knob

7. More unique (in Seoul, Korea)

8. More sonorous (diesel) engine sound which sounds romantic (reminds me 80s and 90s Mr. Green )

9. Can choose Mauritius Blue car paint

10. And my wife says.."Why do you need a larger car such as Disco4? We need 2 seats only!!" (Sometimes my son and Boston terrier join us but very rarely)

I do enjoy driving my 2013 Freelander 2 but I regularly dream of Disco 4. (Just dreaming.. I won't leave my Freelander 2.)

England 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Santorini Black

Been ther done that, had a lovely blue D4 HSE with a pronounced hesitation which the dealer failed to fix on 2 occasions, yes it was a beautiful car but expensive to run the V6 did sound nice though and I wasn't a fan of the rotary shifter either. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

Stop global winging.

I have to be honest bungholio, I agree wholeheartedly with much of your thoughts, as while I would have loved to go for a Discovery 4 the Freelander 2 makes so much more sense for me and my situation, plus I hope to have fewer problems and have a 2 yr approved LR warranty to boot if needed.
And, while I didn't set out with the aim of it, owning one in the lovely Mauritius Blue is a definite benefit to F2 ownership, most of the D4 colours leave me cold (apart from Bali Blue, love that one)

Having moved from FL2's to D4's, I enjoyed reading this thread! Very Happy

The problem is that it's very easy to get used to all that space and that V6 Rolling Eyes But, the FL2 is a lot more sensible for around 360 days of the year Wink

I don't need all that space and that nice sound V6 now. Please lead us not into temptation!!No more looking at a Disco 4.
,
But, 'just' looking at D4 is fine, I suppose. I would like to look at a beautiful Bali Blue D4. (I want to look at my wife's favourite blue, Monte Carlo Blue, D2 as well.)

I can't always get what I want. Besides I don't need one. Rolling Eyes

never had a d4,but we did have 3 d/3s Shocked must admit absolutely loved them, only faults were epb sqeaking(common)fixed by stealer who said at time"never had this before"!! Whistle lying toad.suspension bushes fitted to our last one 2008 when 2 years old clonking, whole lot replaced by stealer with no hassle(known fault due to using softer cheaper ones in that year)
back in fl2 xs/e 2010 manual,great car.

gone
P38 4lt v8 auto no problems, beautiful exhaust howl when giving it some welly(often)
td5 2.5 auto head gasket no 5 pot(bloody german engineering Whistle )but good car.
d3 tdv6s manual epb sorted by stealer.nice car a world apart from td5.
d3 tdv6s auto epb sorted by stealer no fuss.
d3 tdv6 xs auto no problems apart from sus/bushes (which at the time worried me a little Rolling with laughter )
half the time with the above spent in co-pilots seat as swmbo always seemed to be in the pilots seat Big Cry Wink
all the above were also excellent stable towcars pulling mainly large twin axle caravans.

The issues a colleague with a D4 is having make me glad I went for the Fl2.
Ok his has now near 100,000 miles on it (90,000 ish when bought) but it is a 2013 a few months newer than my Freelander and so far he has had the EPB issue (needed a new module as well as all new rear brakes) and he also has the front suspension knock. Yes I had the Haldex pump issue (covered under warranty) but the D4 (granted a top spec HSE Lux) cost him some £10,000 more than my Freelander cost me (and mine is LR approved used, his isn't - a car supermarket!!)

Lightwater - I wish the Petrol was available for me, for most of my use it would probably work out better but alas not an option.

bungholio - strange you mention the Bali Blue D4 colour, always been my favorite option for the Discovery 4 shame they didn't do it for that long. Still sigh when I see a D4 that color for sale then I remember why I went for the Freelander 2 and so far I don't regret it.

"Why am I driving a freel2 rather than D4"

Because the 2.2 engine doesn't do this:

That'll be as a result of a spun main bearing then! It's all swings and roundabouts though, D4's may have a small % of crank failures, but FL2's tend to have their more regular Haldex and rear diff issues. Neither of is get off too lightly! Wink
