Won't Start - System Check

Please Can Someone Help??!!
I've very recently purchased a freelander 2 diesel Automatic, and already having a major problem:'(
It won't start. I put the key fob into the holder, foot on brake, press the start button but it won't start. Everything lights up, no specific message other than 'system check'. It started reluctantly yesterday, but nothing today. Just a small click. I'm literally gutted right now, wishing I'd stuck with my old and battered TD5.

Put key in press the start button, don't put foot on brake, wait until the initializing message on the dash clears
Press the brake and then the start button, it will probably fail to start
Press the start button again to switch off the ignition
Leave the key in the dock
Remove the RED live lead from the battery, earth it count to ten
Replace the red live lead you should here some whirring etc
Jump back in press the brake and then the start button.....should start.

I had a software update done on mine and it's been fine ever since 2007 hse auto

Thanks so much for your advice. We'll deffo try this when my hubby gets home. The battery looks as though it's the original one (2008). Would I have to take it back to the main dealer for an update?? Thanks again, I've had this car only two weeks and it's making me feel quite ill.

I take it that (from it's age) that you didn't buy it from a LR dealer with extended warranty and LR Assist as they would come out and do the software upgrade for you if needed. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

No we didn't buy it from LR, right now wished we hadn't bought it at all!! Had 2x Discoverys and hubby a defender. This is the first freelander and really not getting off to a good start Sad

If the battery is 2008 then i would start with that.
Im the same as you, history of Discovery's including my last two which were TD5's. Freelander 2 is the same as td5's and most other modern cars, its needs a good stable voltage to start, more than just enough to spin the starter like on older vehicles

Brilliant. Thank you for your help. We'll start with battery and also follow the advice above. Might heart sunk to my boots yesterday morning I can tell you. I'll let you know how it goes. I hadn't been 'double-locking' it either to shut down all the power. I'm learning very quickly being on this forum!!

Search LTB00093 there is a soft wear update for older FL2's, not starting and loss of dash display.
After update I have had no problems.

I think a new battery will solve most of your problems, also have a look to see if there has been an extra earth strap fitted that is also well documented on here as curing a lot of problems.

Thank you. Yes I've read lots about the extra earth strap. Hubby will definitely check this too. Thank you.

Don't know if I'm missing something in the post but its KEY IN, FOOT ON CLUTCH THEN PRESS START.
Putting foot on brake just lights up the dash and allows use of auxiliary electrics. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Did say I might be missing something. Embarassed

As it says at the bottom, every time I learn something new, something old is lost out the other side. Laughing Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

I have this too.

I keep pressing the start button and it eventually fires...think it's battery or glow plugs, but not yet bothered to investigate, so would be interested to know if you buy a new battery and it fixes your issue 😀
