Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey
2014 FL2 against new Hyundai Tucson

My daughter is thinking of changing her car this year.
She stays in NE Scotland and caravans herself, very successfully,.
At present she has a Chevrolet captiva 2wd for towing, but is pushing 7 years old.
Had it since new and looked after very well(Down to me and the TA)
She is now looking to change. I have been a member of D2" boys club for the last 12 years with 2 Disco2,s owned.
She knows I think the LR brand is good. Now comes the crunch.
She is looking to change and her choice will be either
2014 FL2 auto diesel with LR warranty or
Hyundai Tucson brand new with 5years warranty.
Both cars have good write ups in the towing world.
My preference, obviously, would be the FL2.
In fact, I wish I could afford to change my Disco 2 for a 14 plate FL2 but don,t have the money.
All comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

for here needs sounds like the Tucson will be more appropriate, it is more modern than the FL2 and will be a natural move from the captive.
FL2 will be the best choice if off road capability is need as well.

The FL with auto towing a van you can't beat it even better with SD engine, Hyundai's are not made to tow they can tow, if she gets a chance the Tucson is down on torque compared to the FL and that means more fuel, the LR stability program for trailers can't be beaten and you don't need any electrical connection for it to activate, Yes the Tucson is a newer car but electrics and electronic wise it still lacks the FL. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I changed my HSE Lux for a Tucson Premium last year.

In my opinion you should not compare a 10 year old design with a relatively new design.

I loved my FL2 and would have bought another if it was available, so no complaints BUT the Hyundai is far more modern has shed loads of equipment comes with a 5 year unlimited warranty and you can get a service plan for approx £500.

I have covered 5000 miles in 4 months without issue as you would expect.

Positives, comfy seats, reasonable fit and finish , very quiet engine compared with FL,comes with full size spare, lots of kit etc.

negatives, radio not as good but adequate, headlights not as good but OK,

IMO buy the Hyundai for a hassle free 5 years

I tow a 1500kg trailer and race car all over the UK without issue and performs as well as the FL but with better fuel economy.

I forgot to mention that I have the 2 litre engine not the 1.7

if it were my daughter, who also lives in the NE of Scotland, the Hyundai would be the choice, a no brainer.

peace of mind for her and me!!

iain, I agree. As said , if it was me I would go for the FL. However peace of mind and long distance phone calls will make me suggest the Hyundai. This has just started. haven't even been to look at the Hyundai yet. SWMBO loves the FL and hates the colour of my Zambezi Silver D2. Next car will definitely be an FL2 albeit probably about 5/6 years old.
Thanks to all but please keep coming with the comments

I had exactly the same thought after reading the first post. Not for me, a Hyundai but it would give me peace of mind if my daughter was driving a new vehicle. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Despite the 5 year warranty which is only on the drive train (excluding clutch) the rest is 3 year 60,000 miles, I would not go back to a Hyundai or Kia, though if forced the Kia would be my choice. The main weakness in the Hyundai is the suspension which is weak compared to the FL and is on the short part of the warranty, parts aren't cheap and the biggest complaint is dealers, in the North of Scotland your dealer will almost certainly be Arnold Clark, the warranty is via the importer not the manufacturer. perhaps a look here would help you decide http://www.hyundaiownersclub.co.uk/forum my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I do not believe the last post reference warranty is correct, certainly not as per documentation that I have.

Clutch is NOT covered as it is wear and tear as per tyres brakes wipers etc.

Suspension on Kia and Hyundi is similar and there are no reports that I can find regarding failure . probably the FL2 is stronger but under normal usage , incl soft off road I suspect there is no problem

cannot speak about specific dealers are than Richmond who are excellent.

one last point is servicing cost £500 for three years in my experience is about half the 3 year LR costs that I had with main dealer, also a years warranty is around £600 I believe.

I am not saying Hyundai is the best car BUT it is cost effective and from new you could have 4 years without any major expense other than consumables

The Kia / Hyundai warranty is one of the most frequently misunderstood warranties available. It's worth getting an update on exactly how little they pay dealerships to carry out warranty work to fully understand how enthusiastic they may be to complete such work! Rolling Eyes

I'd take a 2 year, unlimited mileage, Land Rover dealer used warranty over a 5 year Kia/Hyundai warranty any day!

Have not Hyundai gone to 2year servicing or put it another way every 20K miles, so not so cheap Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Why ?sorry cannot understand that logic

But you obviously know the figures that Hyundai pay their dealers for warranty as well as LR so I would be most interested if you could publish them here, so that I can understand your preference

The main service is 20K with an optional 10K one, perhaps you could confirm the prices for the 15K yearly service from LR as I must be out of touch. My last service was close to 300 pounds from LR and at three years I need ( prefer ) to have a warranty £600 I believe
