RIP Toby - Our Springer Spaniel

2016 had to stick the knife in one last time. RIP Toby. Taken from us so suddenly. So poorly so we had to do the right thing by him as he was suffering. Reunited with his best friend Sam now. So sad Sad

You obvously were great owners for him. When you took him on , you took the responsibility for the inevitable decision he couldn't ever make himself and you didnt fail him when the time came. Thanks for the kind words. So many great memories to look back on but is is hard right now. I have been through this before and it never gets easier.

When I think back to how many people have said goodbye to their dogs while ours were fit and healthy, I felt sorry for them but couldn't imagine the time would ever come. So many years of fun and joy to be had... over too soon.

If you have a dog or cat or other beloved pet, please give them a huge hug and make a fuss of them this evening. Make the most of them and all the joy they bring to your family Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Sorry to hear your sad news, it's never easy but time heals it a little and you will have the memories forever. I have been in the same situation in the past and will be in the future and know exactly how you feel at the moment.

For Toby....

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends, so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks Ian. I'd heard that before and it is much appreciated. Non-dog lovers will never understand why we talk to our dogs when they can't talk back (using words at least) but I spoke to Toby at the very end yesterday.

He was known to us as the dog of steel after I put together a photo slideshow of him with the audio from the Man of Steel trailer in the background. I said to him yesterday:

You will give other dogs an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.  LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

A quote from Gandalf is appropriate also.

The journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Sorry to hear that Doc.

We've just got back today from our annual new year break with friends. Twelve of us this year with ten dogs in one big house in Devon. Seven of them cocker spaniels and all realated to our Susie. There was the Granddad, two Aunts, Uncle, Sister and new young Nephew on his first trip. A bit sad because the Granddad, aged 11, has got Cushings disease and is suffering with dementia. He used to be pack leader but now is a shadow of his former self and we don't think he'll be with us next Christmas. Sad

Always sad when a pet has to leave us but you can console yourself with the fact that he had a good life and you certainly did the right thing when the time came. To him, it was just like going to sleep and his suffering has ended. RIP Toby. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Present: Audi A3 S Line.
