hi, my freelander td4 xs has 17 inch alloys and i have a 17 inch alloy spare, a work mate is selling a set of nice 18 inch alloys but his spare is a 17 inch, he says its ok to use the 17 inch as a spare as the tyre is a 235 65 which makes up for the wheel size difference,

if i buy them i will look out for an 18 inch to use as a spare, but is the seller correct that a 235/65/17 can be used as a spare for a car with 235/60/18 wheels / tyres

True! All the recommended wheel/tyre sizes have the same rolling diameter.

I run 20" Evoque wheels, but I still have a 17" spare.

At the end if the day that's all it is ...... a spare.
Something to get me by if I have a puncture.
And certainly better than a spacesaver or a can of gunk. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Agreed. Notwithstanding my post above, in practice, I prefer to have matching sizes in cases of what may be more than just emergency needs. I have 6 x 19" wheels/tyres, all Triple Sports with Contis' plus 5 x 17" (4 type 2 in grey & 1 type 1 in silver) all with winters.

This has been much discussed in the past. The LR steel spare was a 17" with two slightly different sizes of tyre (for no apparent reason). It carried a yellow speed limiting sticker and was the same for all sizes of fitted wheel. Although there was much argument, the consensus seemed to be that the steel spare was legal but that an alloy spare should be the same diameter - try a search?
There are plenty of 18" alloys coming up for sale (I've just sold one). Note that the 18" Evoque alloy is the same size wheel and tyre, but does have a different offset (sticks out by 5mm) so could affect the handling. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I think the steel wheels have a speed limiting sticker because they should have different wheel nuts.

Alloys need nuts with a longer shoulder. It might be nice to have a set of wheel nuts that suit the steel wheel, but the opportunity for confusion (wrong nuts in alloy) far outweighs the advantage of possibly an extra 20mph with the steel wheel fitted.

Luckily my steel spare had the same size tyre as the other wheels, so when they wore down I bought a similar pattern alloy spare, switched the tyre off the steel spare onto an alloy and bought three matching new tyres, then kept the best of the old ones as my spare. I gave the steel rim away to another forum member. Another disadvantage of the steel spare is that the tyre never gets used, but it's still an expensive full spec tyre. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

hi all, thanks for taking the time to respond, my freelander xs is a 2012 model and it came with the pump and inflator gunk

i have bought a scissor jack and a matching 17 inch wheel and the proper insert for the wheel well


the 18s are in as new condition they have very recent pireli tyres, i will keep one of my 17s ( i have 6 in total) as a spare until i find a matching 18 inch wheel
