Is the fuel filter blocked due to low quality fuel? Like bob said above.

Do you have any diagnostic tools to monitor real time data or is it just a code reader you are using?

Just because the rev counter is picking up rpm does not mean it's picking up the correct signal. If the two sensors (Cam and Crank)aren't reading the same the car will fail to start. There is an excited ring that is used to pick up crank speed that is constantly overlooked as well. People change the sensor and assume it's ok.

Is it a cheap and cheerful sensor that was fitted or a well branded one, such as Bosch or the likes?

Also what was happening around the time it intially stopped? Was the roads soaking wet? Was it off road or rough terrain? Had you not long refueled at small fuel station?

ok guys update , the crank sensor was not land rover or bosch etc, I have a basic code reader but I think that it cant access the land rover system,I have ordered a icarsoft today for future issues. The garage rang to say there diagnostics is saying crank sensor and another code, so they are ordering a new gen crank sensor and will update me tomorrow. The original symptoms were, drove from leeds to doncaster no problem,on the way back wife says it felt sluggish and jerked a couple of times at one point then all ok , conked out at a junction but fired after 3 attempts ,parked up at home then just wouldnt fire following morning? I really hope its just the crank sensor ,I have had every fault going through my head, each one getting more and more expensive. If it is the sensor I will buy a spare to keep in the vehicle just in case.

I would get the garage to scope the crank sensor if I shows two dips in the reading at the same point in the cycle every time I'd have a look into the crank sensor target ring. Or at least a visual of the ring to look for any obvious damage. But if it is just erratic all the time I'd go with sensor. However with it happening then starting again I'd be more pushed toward the crank sensor as it's intermittent which is usually an electrical/electronic problem.

If it's a genuine sensor I wouldn't worry too much about getting a spare as it should be pretty reliable.

Ok an update, car now running fine it turned out to be the crank sensor (£70 plus vat??).The bill for the pleasure…..£402 !! although £65 of this was to tow the car there. It sill seems high to me, but its running and wife happy.Although the guy at the garage tried to justify the cost by saying it took 3hrs to change sensor ,to which i replied it took me 8 mins to take it off and refit it.Shame, because I felt the timing belt they did for me earlier this year was a fair price and a good job ,this time I think they over charged by at least 1hr ,so probably not go back there again. So lesson learnt ,always fit LR parts not aftermarket when electronics are concerned.Merry xmas

Good that it is going now. Yeh it is disgusting what garages try to get away with!

Obviously genuine is always best I have fitted other sensors with success. It is just these cheap and cheerful eBay specials you have to avoid.

Peter don't feel robbed feel thankful. A dealer would have you in a 2 to 3 week queue over the holidays.

Look at the VAT element, a dealer towing charge plus a diagnostic charge would be XXX pounds before they even started to open the bonnet.

Any tradesmen in any trade is not going to be in a rush to be out of pocket when putting right a thirds party tinkering (apologies if you were the third party).

On reflection in the New Year you may think differently about the mechanic who got you going again for Christmas at short notice.

I foolishly 3 years ago set a guy on to do a roof repair and he Censored it up. Booted him off site but the next man along who did some work for English Heritage sorted it to our satisfaction and that cost an Extra Un- budgeted £3,000 Big Cry FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I'd definitely avoid non-Genuine parts. I've used a couple of indies in the past who were excellent mechanics but who I later discovered were using non-standard parts, even though I'd asked them to use the correct ones. This led to a lot of problems, some of which became very expensive. On the Land Rover front the main problem items were front hub (non-Genuine part was an older version) and oil cooler (cheap copy didn't last). Not all indies are the same but the problem with indy garages was I think that they had their own motor factor suppliers, and weren't willing to go the extra mile to get Genuine LR parts. At least my local garage round the corner were honest enough to say they couldn't source the Genuine parts and the ones from their supplier weren't up to much! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I understand they got me in and sorted it ,it was when he told me £45 to put on our machine and then it took 3hrs to do the crank sensor thats when I thought your taking the mickey. I even removed the covers for him!! Sod's law my diagnostic kit turned up today.I feel they should of kept me informed of costs,no just ploughed on then hit me with the bill.Hey ho,once bitten ,lets hope my car stays reliable...

A few reasonable issues raised

If a customer asks to use Genuine parts, then they get genuine parts (or the benefits of OEM explained firstly Wink )

Some aftermarket parts are OK, others are not. Comes down to an individuals experience, IMHO...
Especially with electrical parts...

Customer is first advised of diagnostic cost, and then either further diagnostic time or repair costs. At no pin the should any garage run up a bill expecting the customer to pay up.
I have a few customers who tell me to fix "whatever it needs" I still give them a call to let them know costs involved, so there are no unexpected surprises

3 hours to diagnose and repair a crank sensor is extracting the urine. Unless it included the original recovery...

These are my thoughts too,They rang the day it went in to say fault code showed crank sensor and one on order ,with them mid morning following day,no price on part or cost overall.I knew the tow in charge was £65 inc vat(different company) to be honest I was expecting around £250 inc vat plus tow,He was telling me there technicians had to use code reader and then replace sensor …3hrs seriously I took the under arch cover off and removed and cleaned the old one in 15-20mins tops!!

Anyone know the book time ? That is the only balanced test of a repair cost between differing establishments. Sounds like you are now the ex-customer so nothing to loose by asking for a review of your bill as you still have the option of contacting trading standards left.

Maybe its just that Leeds thing ! Any psychology experts out there as I digress ?

My father 35 years ago ran main dealer workshops in Yorkshire to include Aston Martin, at one time one of his foreman set up on his own in Leeds specialising in Fiat / Alfa and after about a decade he told my father life is good as I have got to the position to be able pick and choose who I do repairs for.
I experienced the "Leeds Thing" myself a year ago arranging my first service outside warranty, went to a local garage, asked for a price, said I wanted to supply my own oil then told to Censored off and get someone else to do it. So the guy who has now done my oil and filter change twice since then with my preferred oil last was time was given a unexpected 6 pack of beers. The smile on his face I feel assures me a warm welcome next time I call.

Oh and as for my Dad he used to say I don't mind a customer with a complaint but they need to tell me as I can try and do something about it as a complaining customer is better than no customer at all. On his death the village and motor trade in Leeds turned out if full to also include the sitting MP and then a RAF trainer flew over the grave as he was lowered in (Dad was ex war RAF but a fly past was most unexpected). Now that man did understand psychology but there again he was not originally from Leeds.

PM me Peter if you want and we can swap details of who we both dealt with in Leeds to our mutual unsatisfaction. Embarassed FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
