ok guys update , the crank sensor was not land rover or bosch etc, I have a basic code reader but I think that it cant access the land rover system,I have ordered a icarsoft today for future issues. The garage rang to say there diagnostics is saying crank sensor and another code, so they are ordering a new gen crank sensor and will update me tomorrow. The original symptoms were, drove from leeds to doncaster no problem,on the way back wife says it felt sluggish and jerked a couple of times at one point then all ok , conked out at a junction but fired after 3 attempts ,parked up at home then just wouldnt fire following morning? I really hope its just the crank sensor ,I have had every fault going through my head, each one getting more and more expensive. If it is the sensor I will buy a spare to keep in the vehicle just in case. |

I would get the garage to scope the crank sensor if I shows two dips in the reading at the same point in the cycle every time I'd have a look into the crank sensor target ring. Or at least a visual of the ring to look for any obvious damage. But if it is just erratic all the time I'd go with sensor. However with it happening then starting again I'd be more pushed toward the crank sensor as it's intermittent which is usually an electrical/electronic problem.

Ok an update, car now running fine it turned out to be the crank sensor (£70 plus vat??).The bill for the pleasure…..£402 !! although £65 of this was to tow the car there. It sill seems high to me, but its running and wife happy.Although the guy at the garage tried to justify the cost by saying it took 3hrs to change sensor ,to which i replied it took me 8 mins to take it off and refit it.Shame, because I felt the timing belt they did for me earlier this year was a fair price and a good job ,this time I think they over charged by at least 1hr ,so probably not go back there again. So lesson learnt ,always fit LR parts not aftermarket when electronics are concerned.Merry xmas |

Good that it is going now. Yeh it is disgusting what garages try to get away with!

Peter don't feel robbed feel thankful. A dealer would have you in a 2 to 3 week queue over the holidays.

I'd definitely avoid non-Genuine parts. I've used a couple of indies in the past who were excellent mechanics but who I later discovered were using non-standard parts, even though I'd asked them to use the correct ones. This led to a lot of problems, some of which became very expensive. On the Land Rover front the main problem items were front hub (non-Genuine part was an older version) and oil cooler (cheap copy didn't last). Not all indies are the same but the problem with indy garages was I think that they had their own motor factor suppliers, and weren't willing to go the extra mile to get Genuine LR parts. At least my local garage round the corner were honest enough to say they couldn't source the Genuine parts and the ones from their supplier weren't up to much! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I understand they got me in and sorted it ,it was when he told me £45 to put on our machine and then it took 3hrs to do the crank sensor thats when I thought your taking the mickey. I even removed the covers for him!! Sod's law my diagnostic kit turned up today.I feel they should of kept me informed of costs,no just ploughed on then hit me with the bill.Hey ho,once bitten ,lets hope my car stays reliable... |

These are my thoughts too,They rang the day it went in to say fault code showed crank sensor and one on order ,with them mid morning following day,no price on part or cost overall.I knew the tow in charge was £65 inc vat(different company) to be honest I was expecting around £250 inc vat plus tow,He was telling me there technicians had to use code reader and then replace sensor …3hrs seriously I took the under arch cover off and removed and cleaned the old one in 15-20mins tops!! |

Anyone know the book time ? That is the only balanced test of a repair cost between differing establishments. Sounds like you are now the ex-customer so nothing to loose by asking for a review of your bill as you still have the option of contacting trading standards left.
