Roof Bars for panoramic sunroof model

Hi, I'm new to both this web site and also to the Freelander 2 after years spent with Discoveries. Having just inherited a 57 plate freelander 2 with a panoramic sunroof I need to have a way of carrying thule box and bikes on the roof. My old disco had the bikes on the spare wheel at the back. I thought that fitting the roof bars available on e-bay would be easy (ish) but they all say that they won't fit vehicles fitted with the panoramic sunroof. I guess this is due to clearance issues when open? Has anybody fitted a non-genuine bar set to a F2 with the panoramic roof? I don't fanch forking out for the genuine ones fom a main dealer!

Many thanks.

John

I used the same Thule roof bars on my first FL2 (without the sunroof) and FL2's number two and three (with sunroof) and there were no clearance issues; there was a huge amount of clearance Thumbs Up

Mine didn't have roof rails and were Thule's standard fitment bars.

Ive got some of the Thule 762 square bars fitted, the sunroof has no clearance issues at all. Wind noise is Censored annoying though Mr. Green

I didnt want to fit the standard roof rails, think they make the car look odd from the back....bit like the car is wearing a fez. 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

Tow bar rack for the bikes works for me but if you have a van to pull as well that wont help.

Thought about a top box for skis etc but then decided it was a cost too far but read on.

In Winter my wife is not happy to loose use of the FL so if I want to go off to ski I sometimes go to the Airport in her 2 seater with a ski bag (just about stuck up my nose) placed across the other seat. Better that than no ski trip I guess (just).

Gentlemen et al,

I'm very interested to learn what your solution was to this roof rail/bars search as as I'm in the same boat so to speak! Confused

I also have a 2007 FL2 with a panoramic sunroof and would really like to fit a set of roof rails and bars to it but the cost of the genuine parts/kit as far outweighed my need thus far. I would be more than happy with an aftermarket kit providing of course that it will fit the car and do the job i.e. will take a lightweight roof box and/or at least one bicycle.

Is there such a kit available? Can anyone recommend such a kit or have an alternative solution please?

On the same subject and from Lightwater's last post that contained a link to his previous posts from 2015 where there was an interesting discussion and selection of vehicle pictures from/with a guy in Portugal (Joao Pinto Reis), which concluded with Joao opting to go for the OEM kit; am I right in my understanding from this exchange of information that the issue isn't so much the height clearance but the width with respect to fitting a kit that is not specific to the panoramic roofed vehicle or have I missed something?

Any guidance and advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

Got a set of Thule crossbars for mine with a sunroof and no issues with clearance. Have a look at:

www.roofbox.co.uk

Select Land Rover and then Freelander 2 and it will show all the options for roofbars

Hi, thanks for the response and the link.

I will check that out but I take it from your post that you already have the correct Land Rover OME rails fitted with which to attach these Thule crossbars to, yes?

cheers.

No I've got a set of Thule crossbars that do not require roof rails.

oh, ok I wasn't aware that this was an option.

Presumably they fit straight onto the car fixing points without the need for any adaption yes?

Everything you need comes with the items you previously identified from Thule and they just fit straight on, no messing?

please tell me more... Thumbs Up

Have a look at this link and all should be clear:

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel3...ype=313104

You need ones designed for a car without roof rails.

Should consist of crossbars, foot pack and adaptor.

I like the look of bars without the need for roof rails. Is anyone aware of any models which fit into the locations where roof rails would fit, rather than using some sort of clip which grips the roof edge? FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory
