Offroad in Sicily

Hi guys,

I am thinking of going off roading in Sicily. Before I go I plan to fit side protection tubes, Fuel tank guard and bigger A/T BF Goodrich tyres (245/70/17). I will also be doing this with a couple of buddies who drive 90s.

Anyone been there and which trails would you recommend. Was thinking Nebrodi park, something like this: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=5730317

thanks
Mark

Was there a year or so ago and you need all the kit on the normal roads as they drive like nutters. Laughing FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi mad,

Protection for the fuel tank is a good thing. But beware of steep slopes ! As I can see, you have a manual, and there is no protection for the cluch except a low range or an Autobox. Believe me......

you might be right, but I am very eager to try the anti-stalling system on my freelander. it seems to be quite good on the road (managed to climb a very steep road at a constant 6kph) but no idea how it would do when the going gets rough.

Hi mad,

I have the anti-stall system on mine (MY11). It is good on road - I tested it on parking slopes. But it has it's limits and when the slope will be more than 18% or 20% , the car will stall. So when you will be off-roading and stall, don't try to start again and go forward from the middle of the slope. You will have to reverse and try to start from a flat area with more momentum, DSC off (because it kills the throttle) and mud & ruts mode or sand mode.

If you won't do it , you'll definitely burn your clutch

Cheers

Yes 100 % right. But don't forget to put it back on road. And when it is very steep, put the TR on sand or M&R.

But all of this will not replace Low range. If the clutch smells, don't insist for more than 5 seconds (to let the traction control react) and do act like described in my previous post. Freelander 2 TD4 S / Santorini black / Genuine factory GPS with Bluetooth phone connection / Front and Rear parking aids

side tubes are really only cosmetic, they will save the odd scrape or two but will probably get seriously dinted and bent them selves they are only thin steel At work

Hi,

My went into supposedly safe mode on a 4X4 and we had to tow it onto a road (Spanish Law) to be recovered, the tow rope snapped so make sure you have one with at least 5t breaking strain, thts just in case.

Two might even be better.

what about the front sump guard? My freelander already has a steel engine under cover, i do not think a sump guard would be beneficial? I am talking about something like this: http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/land-rove...rd-07.html

thanks

sump guard is stronger, it just the LR side tubes are more of a fashion thing, mounts are not substantial and the tubes easily bend or dint they will guard the car somewhat At work
