As a newcomer to the LR family after just buying a 2012 Freelander 2 and enjoying this forum,my previous car was a VW Passat whos forum has lengthy debates on the addition of 2 stroke oil, I regularly added a measure of oil to a tank of diesel
The VW most certainly benifitted in quieter ,smoother running with 3-5 more MPG
I will be adding 2 stroke oil to the Freelander

Had Freelanders since 2000 and always put oil in the tank.
MOT emissions tests show almost zero difference in 8 years on Freelander 2 and Freelander 1.
Someone asked about the proof of noise reduction, well month I carried out a test with a Decibel Meter mounted on the engine block. The difference between the 2 readings with & without the additive showed a reduction in sound volume of 3 decibels with the additive. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

Well I have just covered my first 100,000 miles with a Merc that I have run with TSO in the tank from brand-new.
DPF ash content is 13%
MPG improved by 7%
Torque much better,
When investigating engine live data Injection correction values almost identical which tells me all cylinders firing very evenly
Still sounds like brand-new.

2 interesting observations over the 100,000 miles. It hasn't been going into REGEN mode.( hasn't needed too )
Using a cheaper brand of TSO recently bought in France has taken the edge off performance so there is a difference in TSO.

I will go back to Castrol Acti low ash JASCO FC spec.

Well after reading about 25 pages of whether to use or not to use two stroke oil as per YF's post and the last few pages I have decided to try a low ash 2 stroke oil. I have purchased some for just £5 per 1lt on e bay tonight.

I am an ex mechanic and can understand the arguments both for and against this debate and conclude that if in fact the extra lubrication offered and cleaning of the valve system, turbo etc etc happens which I believe it does then I will be doing no more than my dealership does adding injector fuel system cleaner to my vehicle at service time and if I periodically add 2t then my engine will be slightly better off than not doing anything. Why do I not add it all the time I hear you ask ? well the answer is I am not that brave to put my whole trust in something that is not recommended by the manufacturer but I do believe we have lost something in trying to make fuel's too clean at the expense of wear properties in fuels.

I may also add that as an ex chairman of a koi society the same arguments raged about adding salt PDV to ponds for disease prevention algae control and better osmoregulation in the event of injury and the jury is still out. I however add salt and have done for 14 yrs to no ill effect and have seen benefits so just like I have deliberated the above it comes down to You either do or don't it's a personal choice.

I used 2 stroke in my Freelander1 Td4. The engine was quieter and smoother. However if I laid off of it for a couple of fills then the engine would sound really agricultural. I was lucky that I could buy my 2 stroke cheaply as I have friends in the motorcycle business so used to buy it 5 litres at a time for around 15 quid. If I had a diesel Freelander 2 instead of my i6 then I'd be using it in that too.
I used to run my old ex- military 110 on vegetable oil before it became more expensive than diesel. Worked out at around 28p a litre at the time. The looks I used to get when pouring it into the tank on Asda car park were priceless! I used 2 stroke then too. When I sold it I told the bloke who bought it I would use veggie oil sometimes. He contacted me months later via email saying it started smoking excessively until one day it gave up the ghost entirely. He blamed the veggie oil. Turns out he used to fill it every time with veggie oil only. I didn't have the heart to tell him I only topped up with 15 litres at most every other fill and used 2 stroke oil, on top of whatever diesel was in the tank to dilute it anyway.

Lets be honest

Research is expensive, someone has to pay the researcher, if you want repeat business, you don't give a response that would put the company/person paying the bill in a bad light. You might not give them the answer that they want, but you certainly don't say that their product is rubbish.

You don't say that a food producers product destroys vitamins x y z, you just say that it enhances flavour, or stays fresher for longer. The same goes for oil companies, car companies, light bulb companies - you name it. To those who are regular 2SO users, did you feel that the car is more lethargic (I know this isn't being very scientific)?

I tried a few tankfuls with 2SO at the recommended dosage, using Shell Advance VSX semi, Jaso FC. And went back to no 2SO after two or three tanks with 2SO. Repeated the process. I felt that the engine revved more freely (no pun intended..) without 2SO in the mix. I didn't know what to make of it. Thank you in advance for the comments.

that might occur with semi or fully synthetic 2SO.
I had that impression with fully synthetic Castrol Oil.
Now I use good quality mineral 2SO (Ravenol, a local Company) and it feels smoother.
You can tell the difference on cold mornigs (that you don't have in Kuala Lumpur).
At -9°C theres little noise coming from the engine, without 2SO it sounds like a tractor.
