In Flanders fields.

I always think of this poem around this time.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I will shortly join the village memorial service at the War Memorial where there is a parade from the local army camp. However I was just looking at a piece on the BBC website where a number of youngsters across Europe were asked about WW1. It is already disappearing from the common memory in the same way as the Crimean or Boer War.

Our dogs paying their respect at 11:00 this morning. We were going by our watches but from somewhere in the woods we heard a ruddy great cannon going off at 11:00 and at 11:02. I think it was a local farmer with a gas gun or something.

Great poem a Steve.
Although I have no problem with the 2 minutes silence, like with many things, it has become expected to do this.
Personally, I don't need to stand once a year in silence to have respect for these ordinary men who sacrificed so much. I will never forget the bravery of these outstanding people who gave up their jobs, their homes, their families, and all to often their lives to volunteer to protect us.

I was in Bakewell today for the parade marching through the streets, laying the wreaths then heading up the hill to the church. I leave you with one of my favourites:

Yes indeed, my grandfather died of injuries on the Somme aged 31 leaving a wife and my mother aged 5. A woman in the street had gone around to every house where the man hadn't volunteered (generally because they had families) handing out white feathers, most responded by joining up but few of them came back alive. Evidently such was the animosity towards her afterwards that that she moved house. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

One of the most poignant songs ever.

 Common sense isn't very common.
