I will shortly join the village memorial service at the War Memorial where there is a parade from the local army camp. However I was just looking at a piece on the BBC website where a number of youngsters across Europe were asked about WW1. It is already disappearing from the common memory in the same way as the Crimean or Boer War.

Our dogs paying their respect at 11:00 this morning. We were going by our watches but from somewhere in the woods we heard a ruddy great cannon going off at 11:00 and at 11:02. I think it was a local farmer with a gas gun or something.

I was in Bakewell today for the parade marching through the streets, laying the wreaths then heading up the hill to the church. I leave you with one of my favourites:

Yes indeed, my grandfather died of injuries on the Somme aged 31 leaving a wife and my mother aged 5. A woman in the street had gone around to every house where the man hadn't volunteered (generally because they had families) handing out white feathers, most responded by joining up but few of them came back alive. Evidently such was the animosity towards her afterwards that that she moved house. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
