Just been to main dealer for M.O.T and major service.I expected a bill for around £500, but ended paying an extra £2000!
Several oil leaks were found, including: rear diff seal, crankshaft rear oil seal, sump gasket leak, and rear off-side shock absorber leak.Anyway, all is sorted now. The joys of motoring!

Out of that lot the shocks would be the only MOT issue. I think you have been had if you had not spotted large pools of oil where you parked overnight. Sad FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I can't believe that I've been had,as I've got video evidence of the problems. You are probably right though.Luckily,I have now been given the address of a reputable independent who I shall be visiting in the near future.

Reminds me of the experience of a pal of mine when we were Engineering Officers in the RAF. He put his car into a Renault main dealer for an MOT and was told ' the front discs are nearly worn out, the front pads are nearly worn out, the exhaust is just about to start blowing and the wiper blades are nearly finished' to which he correctly replied - 'so it has passed the MOT then' ! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Luckily this sort of thing is rare, but not unheard of. I once took a Disco to a LR dealer in Kent, and they found several thousands of pounds worth of things wrong with it. I then took it to an indie who had a good look, found a couple of things they had missed, but said that the main (expensive) things they had found really didn't need doing (and were still OK years later!). Hopefully all the work the OP had done really was needed, but getting a second opinion is not a bad idea in these circumstances. My experiences suggest that the dealers are basically used to dealing with warranty cars only a few years old, and often have a high turnover of not-too-well-trained staff. People expect their warranted cars to be perfect, so if something a bit older comes in, any signs of a bit of wear and tear can look like a fault that needs repairing in order to make the car "perfect" again. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

My wife's Peugeot 1.4 16v petrol has an oil leak from the head gasket, it's a common fault on that engine and it's been like it since at least 2011 and there is no oil in the water. I found that if I topped the oil up then the leak got worse so now I keep it right at the bottom end of the dipstick marker and when she starts it up a message still comes up saying "oil OK". It's a 10 year old car that has only done 45k miles so not really worth fixing as it's a big job to do the gasket but it seems to run OK despite a "starved" oil leak. Not sure I would treat my FL2 this way of course! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
