I got the idea to see Bilbunya Dunes from YouTube video recommended by my good mate Mike. I was planning a long drive west anyway vaguely wishing to visit the amazing Nullarbor and the video highlighting the wanders of the Great Australian Bight gave my vague idea of a trip the needed purpose and objective.

I never knew that my trip will coincide with one of the biggest storms to hit Australia, but that was tomorrow. My first night after a day’s drive saw me just past Mildura, some 1000 km out of Sydney and WikiCamps recommended to spend the night around a lake named Lake Cullulleraine.

This is a happy place. Chilly wind blowing from south/west prompted me to zip the side wall (designed and made by Vesko) to the car awning and create a cosy homey space, where I could enjoy a couple of pork rashers on the BBQ with a plentiful green salad - the charcoal BBQ providing warmth against the chilly night.

There is an amazing sunset, hinting at the volatile weather that would come the next day, but the morning is calm and sunny, perfect for a short stroll around the lake:

looks like a very nice trip. The storms we have had have been mad. We get caught a few times. One evening with very high winds I was worried if trees would fall, & the rain falling out of the sky by the bucket bathfull. After 30 seconds it looked like I had got out of a bath fully clothed!

What sort of fuel consumption do you get & do you carry any extra? Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi Lightwater, I carry one 20l can on the roof rack. On this trip I had about 9.6 l/100km, 6200 km but half of it was against very strong wind. 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 SE

I averaged about 11.6 L/100 but that included a lot of slow off road & towns etc. We copped quite a few strong head winds, basically I did about 90 km/h, we were not in a rush so it was not an issue. I noticed that with a mild tail wind we could do a 100 km/h & were still using 1.0 L/100 less, if not a bit better, around 8.5 L/100 with all the crap of the roof out west NSW on the flat roads. The rubbish on the roof certainly does not help fuel consumption.

I am chucking out the roof platform, they are poorly designed dead weight! I have bought an additional 2 cross bars & am in the process of redesigning the rooftop. I can now have 4 x 10 litre (not using 20L on the roof, my back can't cope!) containers at the back & the 6th wheel in front.

The roof platform is approximately 25 kg with additional stiffening, & this was still not good enough. The 2 extra cross bars are 3.6 kg. So a can carry another 20 litres & am still ahead, with the benefit of emptying fuel containers on the run!

We also had 1 x 20L, 1 x 10L, 3 x 5L & 5 x 1L water containers on board, most of it behind the front seats.

The 4 cross bars are sitting on top of the sixth wheel, with a bit of surgery to go!

I can't wait to hear about this, that's an epic number of kilometres for a short time period trip. Did you go in via Caiguna and did you do that 160 kilometre stretch of dead straight road? Very Happy
Hey Lightwater, you'll have Vesko salivating showing him pictures of custom modifications that he can think about. If you know anything about setting up electrical gizmos to charge his new lithium battery then you're the man. We're off to Abercrombie River NP on the weekend of the 12th November for a camping shake down to test some new gear for the christmas break if you are interested.

Yep, this is my battery 100 amp/hour and only ten kilos - it performed admirably well during the trip, even though Mike refused to help with advise about the sellog fuses Wink :

Lightwater, I also got rid of the metal roof platform, now instead I use a couple of timber planks that hold the tyre and the 20 l can.

Hey Mike, Yes, I drove the dead straight road, but it doesn't seem any straighter than so many roads in Australia. Can't wait for the 12th. Very Happy 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 SE

Mike, what kind of engineer are you if you can't distinguish between a fuse and a resistor? Very Happy 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 SE

Don't they resist & blow a fuse. All the same to me! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Great trip you had and the photos are amazing! You should sell them to a Land Rover brochure. Smile

Geez it looks like the car copped a thrashing, I'll be checking out your battle scars when next we meet. I don't think people who haven't done it realize just how remote you are doing that trip and solo with no lift and no low range to boot. I take my hat off to you Vesko. Bow down

Hey Mike, It was a thrashing but not that much: the mirrors got nocked off, a few new scratches on the side panels, most of witch I managed to conceal with proper polish and wax. The only serious damage was the muffler - the rubber covered section on the cliff was too deep and while climbing it the muffler was pulled off without me realizing, so later in the bush I caught a tree branch, which got stuck fast between the muffler and the back left wheel. That was scary! I had to MacGyver my way out of this one using the car jack, and a system of straps to push the muffler back in place. It's funny that I drove 3000 km with the muffler held in place by sticky tape. Very Happy

I have to add my growing admiration for this car - it is simply amazing! 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 SE
