looks like a very nice trip. The storms we have had have been mad. We get caught a few times. One evening with very high winds I was worried if trees would fall, & the rain falling out of the sky by the bucket bathfull. After 30 seconds it looked like I had got out of a bath fully clothed!

Hi Lightwater, I carry one 20l can on the roof rack. On this trip I had about 9.6 l/100km, 6200 km but half of it was against very strong wind. 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 SE |

I averaged about 11.6 L/100 but that included a lot of slow off road & towns etc. We copped quite a few strong head winds, basically I did about 90 km/h, we were not in a rush so it was not an issue. I noticed that with a mild tail wind we could do a 100 km/h & were still using 1.0 L/100 less, if not a bit better, around 8.5 L/100 with all the crap of the roof out west NSW on the flat roads. The rubbish on the roof certainly does not help fuel consumption.

I can't wait to hear about this, that's an epic number of kilometres for a short time period trip. Did you go in via Caiguna and did you do that 160 kilometre stretch of dead straight road? |

Yep, this is my battery 100 amp/hour and only ten kilos - it performed admirably well during the trip, even though Mike refused to help with advise about the sellog fuses |

Mike, what kind of engineer are you if you can't distinguish between a fuse and a resistor? |

Don't they resist & blow a fuse. All the same to me! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Great trip you had and the photos are amazing! You should sell them to a Land Rover brochure. |

Geez it looks like the car copped a thrashing, I'll be checking out your battle scars when next we meet. I don't think people who haven't done it realize just how remote you are doing that trip and solo with no lift and no low range to boot. I take my hat off to you Vesko. |

Hey Mike, It was a thrashing but not that much: the mirrors got nocked off, a few new scratches on the side panels, most of witch I managed to conceal with proper polish and wax. The only serious damage was the muffler - the rubber covered section on the cliff was too deep and while climbing it the muffler was pulled off without me realizing, so later in the bush I caught a tree branch, which got stuck fast between the muffler and the back left wheel. That was scary! I had to MacGyver my way out of this one using the car jack, and a system of straps to push the muffler back in place. It's funny that I drove 3000 km with the muffler held in place by sticky tape. |
