Retrofit sat nav in my2014 Freelander GS

Hi, new to this but here goes;

I've bought a freelander 2 gs MY2014, the main gripe is the 5" radio screen. I've seen breakers selling sat nav units and dash as per here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2013-LANDROVER-F...SwQItT7hxL

Can any one advise me, is it possible to simply remove the current radio etc and plug and play this? Or will the GS model lack the wiring? [/url]

Firstly, nothing is impossible!
Secondly you'll need to;
Change out the main dash harness
Change out the main ICE harness from the base of the transmission tunnel to rear of car
Change out 5" screen for 7" touchscreen
Add subwoofer
Add Amplifier module
Add all new speakers
Make all necessary changes to CCF to enable system.
I also may have missed a few things, it's not a small job! MY15
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Surround Camera System
InControl Apps soon to be replaced with CarPlay (WIP)
Meridian Premium Surround Sound
Digital Audio Broadcast
Timed Climate
Cruise ECO Data
Follow Me Home Reverse
Extra Features Menu
Picture In Motion
4x4i screen (WIP)
Digital Broadcast TV
Meridian Rear Media with WIFI
Factory Powered Tailgate
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
Reverse Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
Electrochromatic Wing Mirrors (WIP)

Was discussed on here a few times already. As Stuart mentioned all the wiring harnesses are different, not to mention the other components.

Long story short it's easier (and probably cheaper) to trade in the car for one that already has the upgraded audio system.

Or just buy a map! We recently had some visitors from Oz who hired a car at Heathrow and took several hours longer than usual to get to us. They had driven all over the place following the sat nav (Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral etc). When we had a look at the settings it looked as if the previous hirer had set it up to only go on "B" roads looking for places of interest and they just followed it blindly ! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Maps are great technology, I drive around Australia with them. Also drive around Europe for months on end, & more to the point in Italy without street names! You know it keeps your IQ up to par, exercises for the brain!

In a few years with all the space pollution, satellites will fail. Optimists give it 25 years, pessimists are saying 5 years. So I would get up to scratch with map reading skills! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

The GPS in my Jag uses accelerometers, vehicle speed & steering angle sensor to follow where you are if there's no satellite coverage. I'll be fine Smile 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Interesting, do you have any idea how accurate it is without GPS satellite corrections every so often? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It's not super-accurate, but it's pretty good considering the tech in it 15 years old now.

It works very well in tunnels, tracks exactly where you are, even if you stop, take an exit in the tunnel, etc. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

The FL2's satnav is pretty accurate in tunnels, pulling the caravan through the Frejus tunnel between France and Italy for just over 8 miles under the Alps, it was spot on and approaching the exit the icon was with it all the way. Obviously algorithms and data from the car gave it it's smooth update although it was showing no GPS available.

Agree with Dorset above - unless your moonlighting for MyHermes, a commercial traveller or rep calling on customers hither and thither can't really see the point of sat navigation at all sorts if silly money. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

The HDD Satalite Navigation in the later Freelander 2 is an impressive piece of kit! There are many options for planning your trip both off-road and onroad. If GPS is lost it tells you and continues to track your progress from onboard sensors.
Only negative I see is that it is extensive in its ability and unless you know what or how to use it then it can be a little overwhelming. So like most technology it's usually the human operator who's at fault! MY15

Google maps and a decent in car phone holder is your friend Smile

That's what I've done Very Happy also turns out if you have Bluetooth set up you can use siri/Cortana for hands free commands for making calls through the car speakers.
