OK so this might be a bit extreme if you don't already have the Japanese market mirror mount on your FL2 but I assume you could buy the mount (part number 3044-018 but I can't find any reference to this on line) and drill the holes.

This modification can be restored back to original so keep all the mirror parts safely ready to put back prior to re-sale.

Parts needed:

Freelander 2 (obviously)
3304-018 mirror mount plus rubber pad
5/8 X 1-1/2 X 14G 304 stainless flat washer
5/8 X 2 X 10G 304 stainless flat washer
NMO N-Female Bulkhead mount, I used this:

this is a Type N connector but you can get UHF connector type for CB as well.
5/8" solder lug (this goes under the 5/8" lock nut on the Type N barrel body under the mount) and a short length of 1/2" wide braid.

MNO base antenna of choice (for this position a ground plane independent type is best). Lastly you'll need a run of coax with suitable connectors routed through the firewall.


Starting with one ex-Japan FL2:




Remove front mirror:




Dissassemble mirror to remove inner HDPE/FRP plastic core:




So now with the extra parts on hand you should have this:




Assemble together like this:




The smaller washer is a neat press fit in to the top hole, while the larger washer goes underneath.

Attach to pre-existing mount holes using original screws (I trimmed the rubber pad as the edges were a bit perished on my wagon):




Because the mount is plastic the antenna base is not earthed for RF (the coax outer is not enough). So you will need to connect an earthing braid using the 5/8" solder lug and fix it under the bonnet to bolt that goes into the back of the mount. Use a star washer to bite through the paint.

Screw antenna on to base and you're done:

What's excatly is the purpose of the extra bonnet mirror? I've heard so many conflicting pieces on information regarding it.

all I know is that its a legal requirement on Japanese cars, but ive only ever seen them on 4x4/SUV imports over here.
Imported Shoguns have them, as do Nissans 4x4 Jap import models

Maybe its because they show any locals in Tokyo that may be hiding underneath the normal door mirrors

Legal requirement in Japan so you don't accidently run over a toddler (aka little person) standing hidden below the bonnet sight line.

The front mirror actually has two convex surfaces, one shows the area directly in front of the vehicle while the other shows the curb. Both are handy for parking if you don't have front parking assistance.

I don't miss it at all and I don't live in Japan. I also have years of practice not running over things in my old Disco II which did not have front or rear parking assistance. 2008 Freelander 2 i6 Alaska White - current

Over here this would not comply as you can't have any protrusions which present a danger to other road users. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Two points to note, it actually does not protrude beyond the front bumper and the original mount is approved as frangible I.E it breaks off on impact with a pedestrian. The modifications do not alter that. 2008 Freelander 2 i6 Alaska White - current
