12 plate block key erratic: problem now fixed, see end post

I have a 2012 XS with the block key that fits in the dash.
It's started being erratic but when I switched keys, thinking the fob battery was dying it made no difference.

Car doesn't always start, is this a known problem?

My guess is that connections work loose eventually?

Now booked in for looking at but a nervous 4 weeks to negotiate in the meantime. If I get stuck LR Assist will arrange a replacement.

Bump
Has anyone got any ideas?

Could it be the part of the dash that the key lodges in perhaps?

are the batteries in the two fobs good ? originals ?

could it be the car battery?

can you explain the symptoms in a bit more detail.

The key fob is a "brick" type one that slots into a hole by the steering wheel, on a 12 plate XS auto.
I don't turn the key at all, but slot it into the whole, hold the brake down then press the starter button.

I don't think it is the battery (which cannot be changed!) since SWMBO had the new one and that is behaving exactly the same.

I am wondering if others have had the same problem, i.e. the engine just not even trying to start (dead response).

It has sometimes taken three attempts, removing the key, inserting it, trying again before the car is starting.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Either the fob receiver or the brake switch is problematic.

Sorry I didn't explain it that well. I do know how they work I use to have one, by the way you can change the battery check out YouTube it shows you. What I meant is will the fob go into the slot ok and eject ok and can you turn on the ignition on without starting the engine. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

Yes
I can insert and eject the key and the radio will work
It is just that it doesn't always start after that point now, never had that before this week.

So far it has always managed to start after a few goes but I was faced with the prospect of going to a job interview on Friday morning in the S2A nearly 30 miles away out in the sticks so was very relieved when it started 3rd time. Thumbs Up

Might have been cool to turn up in the S2A but would have been a bit rumpled most likely. Embarassed

But does the ignition come. Try just putting the fob in and press the start button without depressing the clutch pedal..... presuming it's is a manual and if the ignition lights come then I can't see it being a fob problem. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

OK.
Docked the key and pressed start without touching the brake pedal. Radio and satnav screen turned on.

No, not until I go ahead, press the brake pedal, then start the engine.

It's starting to sound strange with your radio and sat nav working but I still don't think it the fob that's the problem. It needs a diagnostic doing generally around £50. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green
