Just wondering if any of you have wired single electrics for a towbar, either using Landrover plug in lead, or traditional N type bypass relays.

To answer your last question first .... because there are people like me (who you may consider to be stupid) who are willling to pay it ... because the trauma of electrical problems (and a pi55ing match with the dealer) is something I just don't have time for! (actually I problably didn't pay quite that much because I got the whole lot fitted for £420) Anyway for various reasons I took my car to my friendly towbar specialist after the dealer had fitted the towbar, he reckoned there are two plugs into the car harness. One is easily found behind the lower trim panel on the LHS of the boot, but he seemed to think there was a second one behind the main plastic side panel, he didn't take that panel off but he was certain he could feel it. He was also certain that people in the aftersales market were developing a low cost plug-ins so the information is out there with the specialists. He also reckoned that it looked very similar to the fitment in the latest Ford Galaxy, which would make sense given the ownership of LR these days. The phrase 'canbus' kept cropping up in relation to the wiring standard, I don't know if that means anything to you ... |

I've just googled CANbus.................................... and don't understand any of what I read but here you go, here's a link to a description of what one of them is!

When I got my car I had the towbar fitted pre-delivery. When I hitched up to my van a few weeks later nothing worked. A quick whip round to the garage was necessary as the on board computer had to be programmed to know that the trailer wiring was present. All worked fine after that.

Did yours work then Mark, or is it necessary to have a LR dealer "activate" it? |

Works great, but I didn't use LR wiring kit (too much of a rip off!), so nothing to activate.

For the first time of my life, I didn't fit the towbar myself. Exactly: because of the electronics.
