Read this with interest as I run these wheels with the standard 245/45 tyres and have always thought the reduction in tyre height (although exactly the same radius as the originals) left the arches appearing emptier than before.

Any issues running 275 width tyres, either clearance or fitting to the rim? Your look is a bit too 'beefy' for me on summer tyres, but I'm thinking of maybe some 255/45 or 265/45 to find a midway point. They'd stand 4.5mm or 9mm respectively higher in the arches by my calculations.

255/45 on a 20 gives you exactly the same rolling radius for the FL2.
My 275/45s are therefore slightly oversized at under 3%, which is within the recommendations for oversizing.
Previously ran 285/50 which was well oversized, but did fill out the arches.

Have absolutely no issues with rubbing. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Fog light surrounds are from Powerful UK.
Mine are silver trim but you can also get chrome trim, if that's what you prefer. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Not to annoy anyone by saying this, just to provide alternative info...

Having looked into this I came to the conclusion that 275 is not suitable (safe) on an 8" wheel such as this. I asked the opinion of 3 tyre fitters and they all said they wouldn't fit a 275 to an 8" wheel. Nor could I find anyone by googling who advises it.

245 is widely regarded as the maximum. Those tyres do look very 'balloony' to me from what you can see, and I was advised the sidewall bulge would put the tyre at risk. Each to their own but not a risk I wanted to take personally. I do a lot of motorway driving and no off-road.

To fill the arches out a bit from the 245/45r20 Evoque tyres I've just fitted 255/50r20. This gives a tyre 'height' effect similar to Rons, and although only 10mm more width, looks much wider. My tyres do balloon very slightly at this, but the fitter says with the extra profile it will be fine. I wouldn't want them any wider off the rim or I think they'd look daft in any case.

Filled out the arches nicely and gives a much better ride, and the speedo is now absolutely bang on according to GPS. Plus Nokian Roadians (well thought of by Range Rover owners) at £80 a corner is fine with me!

I tried one in the boot actually as a spare and it fit fine in the well, but was SLIGHTLY too big to allow the boot floot to sit flat. We're talking probably 1 or 2mm. But 275s would almost certainly be too big. HTH.

The recommended rim width for my tyres is between 8.5" & 10.5".
Although slightly undersized by .5", I feel happy [& safe] enough to run them.
[especially with their XL load rating over standard tyres]
So will be sticking to running my 'balloons', thank you.

@OK - just got the standard 17" in the boot.
If I ever need to use it I'll use it on a restriced basis [as with a spacesaver], but only til the LTZ is repaired then put back on the axle.
In all my 8 years or so of running LTZ's, I've never had a puncture [or 'balloon' blow-out!] - yet, so the spare isn't a big issue to me. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

To be fair I did say mine looked slightly balloony too. Not trying to offend anyone. I went out fully with the intention of fitting 275/45's, but 3 of them saying the same thing was enough to persuade me to look in another direction. Each to their own!

Wasn't being "precious" was just addressing the facts.
As it seemed it was wrong for me to run .5" under the rim width, but ok to run 17.5mm over in sidewall height.

FL2 looks good btw

Running increased sidewall height doesn't affect the physical shape of the tyre though. Forcing a wide tyre on a narrow rim causes a bulge in the sidewall and (apparently) that reduces the integrity of the sidewall and increases side to side movement, potentially leading to an increased risk of the tread overtaking you on the M6.

With a taller sidewall, there is more to flex (especially as you say they are 'ballooney') and are not of an XL carcass rating to cope better with flexing. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Yes increased sidewall allows more flex, clearly. But it's natural tyre movement, and natural tyre shape. And let's face it a 50 profile tyre is hardly huge. What are they stock, 65?

What you've done is force a lip or a bulge in the sidewall. The tyre surface can't force itself to be narrower, nor can the wheel make itself wider.



It's that discrepancy which (apparently) can cause the side-to-side flex of the tyre which is the concern, because the sidewall has lost it's rigidity.
