Hi thanks for the reply, I have just driven again to the local shops and during my return trip ignition light comes on.

Does it happen if you turn off all accessories including AirCon?

It is a possibility that the diodes in the rectifier bridge are failing. Primarily their function is to allow current to flow one way and that is into the battery , not out from it i. I'm just basing the above suggestion on two alternators we had fail over the years on the Defenders, similar symptoms. I have a USB socket device which plugs into the cigar socket. It has a digital readout and shows the battery voltage and it normally reads about 14.4 volts when driving and reduces to about 12.8 volts when the engine stops.
