Charging / not charging

Hi guys, once again I come bearing a problem. Sad

start car it's charging but after about 10 mins driving the light comes on if I come to idle (up until 10 mins all appears ok)
drive away light still on until I get to about 1500 /2000 revs
come to idle or driving slowly 1200-1500 revs light comes on
stop car turn of engine, start directly light is off for a few minutes then above (if I do motorway driving at 70-80 mph (2000+revs) no problem until I slow down

checked belt its not slipping

and now?????

Could be alternator check battery too.

Hi thanks for the reply, I have just driven again to the local shops and during my return trip ignition light comes on.

Parked car in front of the garage and with engine running / airco on (its rather hot here again today) ignition light on.

I checked the voltage on the battery terminals and it is 13.68v that seems ok to me so why is the light on?????

Turned off engine and voltage stars to decay, stops around 12.78 ( battery is only 6months old )

I think that shows everything is working so why is the light on ?????

Does it happen if you turn off all accessories including AirCon?
Any fault codes?
Have your battery and Alternator professionally tested - I use one of these https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=...3024,d.ZGg
Look through the instructions it will take you through 8 or 9 different tests to check on battery and alternator health

Alternator packing in, probably the rectifier bridge. Go to any competent auto electric specialist and they will test it and provide a replacement if necessary at well below the price of a main dealer. Last time this happened to the Defender we had at the time we took the opportunity to uprate the alternator . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Thanks Martyn,
I always thought that a good test was to turn on lights, airco etc and then check the battery voltage and as I say I did that.

The ignition / charging light was on but my battery voltage was 13.68 ??? surely this says the alternator is OK ?????

It is a possibility that the diodes in the rectifier bridge are failing. Primarily their function is to allow current to flow one way and that is into the battery , not out from it i. I'm just basing the above suggestion on two alternators we had fail over the years on the Defenders, similar symptoms. I have a USB socket device which plugs into the cigar socket. It has a digital readout and shows the battery voltage and it normally reads about 14.4 volts when driving and reduces to about 12.8 volts when the engine stops.
