I had exactly the same issue.

Replaced the switch and it was fine. Steve

Water can leak through the high level brake light - the seal between it and the door skin is Censored
this can run down the inside of the door.

Worth a check while the door card is off. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Seeing this thread reminded me my tailgate had "unlocked" itself a couple of times recently. So I took the tailgate handle off and opened up the switch. It was perfect! Bone dry, no liquid or corrosion (yet dated 05/07 - on a car built 9th July 09). Microswitch worked every time when tested. What a waste of time! Rolling Eyes

Not quite, the tailgate handle has chafed the tailgate at both ends and along the top where the handle touches the paintwork. So bad that it will need a respray some time. Evil or Very Mad For the moment, I touched it up with some clear lacquer to protect it. In the long term, I might look for a "facelift" tailgate handle and get it sprayed to match when the tailgate is done. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Mine looked perfect too, with no sign of damp or corrosion. Didn't mean it WAS perfect though. Replaced it and everything worked fine afterwards. Steve

If the fault returns and I cannot find an alternate reason for it, I will replace it. But presently it IS working, so I won't fix it! Whistle 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Yes, Sean. The lever was really light to move. Just wish I knew where it was before I destroyed the casing! I could have then drilled a small hole at the right place. Certainly the nylon shaft does not seem to have a lot of work to do. I guess your "mod" will have made it bulletproof!
I ordered a replacement this morning from Dan @Duckworths. Just over £44 + VAT. Will be with me Wednesday. Thumbs Up

Hello dunkley201,

I am experiencing the same pb as yours couple of years ago. Could you please where exactly this release lever is (behind the black casing) as in attached picture.

thx a lot

Hi Sern. Sorry, it is three years since I did that job. I cannot remember the detail now. Should have taken some photos!

Hi Sern. As I said, I do not remember the detail. Also, I see no "attached picture" Sorry. Your simple solution is to buy a new latch.

Can someone tell me which fuse for the tailgate. I read F25 somewhere but on looking at the fuse box they are not numbered on the lid, just silly logos ? Thanks

Most likely to be corrosion in the handle switch. I had this problem recently and was going to replace the switch which is around £30, but wanted to try a a temp fix as there was nothing to loose. I peeled the rubber switch cover in the handle back, cleaned the corrosion deposits up the best I could, then squirted in a load of maintenance spray and reseated the rubber cover. A month later and it's still working fine.

This has been said before, but just in case - if you do get something trapped in the tailgate and it won't lock or open, crawl inside and put your weight behind the door. Probably it will spring open. This was suggested elsewhere on the forum and worked for me. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Tailgate has life of its own... ideas?

Hi,

Got my first ever Land Rover a couple of weeks ago, like it a lot, but having a bit of trouble that has appeared over night...

The tailgate lock keeps popping open... If the car is locked, or on the move, then it doesn't, but if I unlock the doors with the fob, the tailgate pops open too,if I shut it, then it pops open again a few seconds later. So I need to shut the tailgate, run around to the drivers side, get in and lock the doors before it pops open again... Quite annoying...

It's been fine since I got it, and the problem only appeared today. I had a new battery installed just after I bought the car.

It's a 2007 Freelander 2 i6 SE.

We've had very heavy rain recently, I wonder if something is shorting out somewhere. Could it be the fob? I've only got one, so it's difficult to know.

Any hints?

Thanks!

Moray
