Seeing this thread reminded me my tailgate had "unlocked" itself a couple of times recently. So I took the tailgate handle off and opened up the switch. It was perfect! Bone dry, no liquid or corrosion (yet dated 05/07 - on a car built 9th July 09). Microswitch worked every time when tested. What a waste of time!

Mine looked perfect too, with no sign of damp or corrosion. Didn't mean it WAS perfect though. Replaced it and everything worked fine afterwards. Steve 2008 TD4 HSE Auto, Zermatt Silver |

If the fault returns and I cannot find an alternate reason for it, I will replace it. But presently it IS working, so I won't fix it! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Hi Sern. Sorry, it is three years since I did that job. I cannot remember the detail now. Should have taken some photos!

Hi Sern. As I said, I do not remember the detail. Also, I see no "attached picture" Sorry. Your simple solution is to buy a new latch.

Most likely to be corrosion in the handle switch. I had this problem recently and was going to replace the switch which is around £30, but wanted to try a a temp fix as there was nothing to loose. I peeled the rubber switch cover in the handle back, cleaned the corrosion deposits up the best I could, then squirted in a load of maintenance spray and reseated the rubber cover. A month later and it's still working fine. |

This has been said before, but just in case - if you do get something trapped in the tailgate and it won't lock or open, crawl inside and put your weight behind the door. Probably it will spring open. This was suggested elsewhere on the forum and worked for me. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
