Plz Help: 2007 Petrol 3.2l i6 SE - Oil in Coolant

Hello guys!
Recently, when I went to the Landrover shop in Morocco for a scheduled oil change, they told me that there was oil in the coolant system. My 2007 FL2 petrol i6 was working perfectly, wasn't heating at all, so I didn't notice anything alarming.

Landrover said that I have to pay like 3K dollars so they would replace oil coolers (Engine's and gearbox ones), and everything else related to coolant circuit. They also said that it wasn't the gasket.

Besides the fact that they made me pay like 150$ to tell me something that I could have guessed myself, I know they didn't really look at the problem.

So, I need some help on locating the source of the problem. If t's the oil coolant, can I just change it, and flush the cooling circuit a few times to make sure that all oil is gone?

Any help on this for a newbie like me will be much appreciated guys.
Thanks you!

Are they sure its not the head gasket ? . problem is there not many i6 freelanders around over here in England and even main dealers have problems when it comes to repairs on the i6 , all I can think you can do is to flush the cooling system a few times and check both eninge and gearbox coolers pipe's for any leaks and see if you can spot anything if not and there is still oil in the cooling system then may be change the eninge cooler 1st then the gearbox cooler If there's still oil in the system it may be the oil and water is mixing inside of the coolers due to an internal leak that you can't see .

It's a Volvo engine, used in XC90 and many other models.

Thanks guys for your help! I know that it might be the gasket, but as bill2 said I want to try the easy fix first, that is flushing a few times, see if oil is still leaking (probably it will), then replacing the coolers, one by one. Some time ago I wanted to flush the cooling circuit, but I couldn't find the valve on the radiator (I don't know where it is exactly located). Most importantly, I found out that the oil pan's bolts seemed to never have been touched. If my guess is right, my Landrover shop were changing oil using a pomp (since 2007!!!). Could this be true?
Any way guys, if you could tell me where to locate the radiator valve so I could flush the coolant, that would be a good start for me.
I knew that my engine is Volvo's and indeed it's a good idea to look at this direction.
Thanks again guys for your advices. - 2007 FL2 3.2 i6 SE

Hi guys,
I found the radiator drain plug. But, I also found out that, after draining the calling circuit, I'll have to use a vacuum pomp to get the air out of the circuit. I' ll give it a try and get back for results.

Hello everyone,
It's been like 8 months now that I found I had oil in coolant.
I just put the car in the garage and started to read everything I could read related to my car, a Freelander 2 3.2l i6 SE from 2007.
As I never new anything about cars, I had to start from 0.
Well, I enjoyed learning some basics ant it helps me decide to solve my problem by doing the repair myself.

Here is what I did so far:
1- I removed the front bumper, Coolant radiator, AC radiator, oil radiator, PS radiator;
2- Cleaned as much as possible every hose out there, radiators, expansion tank...
3- Replaced the engine oil cooler
4- Replaced the thermostat (some plastic was broken inside)
5- Replaced the water hose from Oil cooler to down line coolant circuit (Was leaking)
6- Replaced hose from thermostat to down line coolant circuit (was leaking)
And cleaned wherever I could clean

Result:
1- After first start after repair, engine running in reduced performance mode.
2- Did a Diag test, no error codes.
3- Checked throttle body, cleaned air filter. Engine running normally again.
4- No oil seems to get in the coolant system anymore.
5- Coolant level seems to drop down systematically after some km.
6- Checked the coolant system: it was the radiator drain plug, a plastic one, which ring seems to have suffered from repetitive open/close
6- Found also a small coolant leak under the transmission (Apparently, it was leaking forever, before I had the oil in coolant problem, I guess it's the water pump which was replaced few years ago).
7- Found also a small transmission fluid leak (probably was there too, but I couldn't see it, the undershield "sponge" was absorbing it).
8- I still have to take out air from the coolant system. I don't have the equipment. I will either visit a dealer, or buy the tool and do it myself. Till then, I am not planning to drive for more than 5 km a day (Home-garage distance).

So here I am, with a running car, which still needs some fixing. But I am glad I could do as much as I could, learn some basic mechanic, and share this with you guys. By the way, thanks for all for your help!

Hi,
Like I said before, I had a radiator petcock leak. I turned the small petcock counterclockwise a little more than the advised open position 1/4, moved it carefully left/right/up/down, and it comes out. The petcock Oring was broken. I ordered one online (like 3$), but before I could receive it, I found a 10 cents replacement oring that fited perfectly. Tried it for a week now, no more leaks at all.

Sorry! Didn't take pictures, but here a Freelander 2 Radiator Petcock pic from internet, in case anybody needs it.

The car is ok now, not leaking, not overheating. Hope it'll still be working fine during the next 20/25 years Wink - 2007 FL2 3.2 i6 SE

Thanks for posting all the info and pics! Great to read, glad you managed to figure it out! I happen to also have a 3.2 i6 - which I'd like to keep for some time - and I'm also in the early stages of learning about car mechanics...

Cheers!

Thanks man. And welcome to the tiny circle of i6 owners Smile
Please don't hesitate to ask for any information about the car. I still don't know much, but I'll happily share what I know, including some pdfs.
Enjoy your ride! - 2007 FL2 3.2 i6 SE
