Are they sure its not the head gasket ? . problem is there not many i6 freelanders around over here in England and even main dealers have problems when it comes to repairs on the i6 , all I can think you can do is to flush the cooling system a few times and check both eninge and gearbox coolers pipe's for any leaks and see if you can spot anything if not and there is still oil in the cooling system then may be change the eninge cooler 1st then the gearbox cooler If there's still oil in the system it may be the oil and water is mixing inside of the coolers due to an internal leak that you can't see . |

It's a Volvo engine, used in XC90 and many other models.

Thanks guys for your help! I know that it might be the gasket, but as bill2 said I want to try the easy fix first, that is flushing a few times, see if oil is still leaking (probably it will), then replacing the coolers, one by one. Some time ago I wanted to flush the cooling circuit, but I couldn't find the valve on the radiator (I don't know where it is exactly located). Most importantly, I found out that the oil pan's bolts seemed to never have been touched. If my guess is right, my Landrover shop were changing oil using a pomp (since 2007!!!). Could this be true?

Thanks for posting all the info and pics! Great to read, glad you managed to figure it out! I happen to also have a 3.2 i6 - which I'd like to keep for some time - and I'm also in the early stages of learning about car mechanics...
