i was charged for the 3rd years brake fluid change, (I got it included FOC through chatting to the service department as they didn't do it on the service) they said it was an extra as its a recommend fluid change, therefore not included in the costing for the service, I argued back that i should have been asked if i wanted it doing and the car was going back to them for additional work so they did it then foc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis |

I would have thought that the only real hydraulic system on the car was the braking system. DAVE. |

Just don't understand surely EVERYTHING is recommended in the service schedule? Nothing is mandatory?

A few cars ago my local indie said that he didn't change the brake/clutch fluid on cars unless it showed up red on his moisture content meter (which you can buy on ebay for a few quid). I have always wondered why it should be changed anyway, it's in a sealed system, unlikely to deteriorate or absorb much moisture. On a high performance car with ceramic brakes driven on a track it might be a different story. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Because on most cars at least some of the brake pipes are cheap, they expand/contract under hydraulic pressure and eventually degrade. This lets in moisture particles into the hyrdraulic fluid which in time degrades brake performance and potentially failure.
