Malaysia 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Baltic Blue
Weird post start problem

After starting, alternator light remains lit.
At this point, nothing is operable......no air con, no headlights or side lights, engine will not accelerate etc. Only solution is to switch off and re-start.

Alternator has been checked, no issues. Battery is new. All fuses intact.

Problem is random.

Car is a MY2008 TD4 FL2.

Now I'm really scratching my head.

Check the earth lead from the battery to the car's body - this has been known to rust where it attaches to the body and cause all kinds of problems. Several people have fitted additional earth straps from the battery to the starter motor to address it.

Earthing is clean as a whistle. There is also an additional earthing strap direct from battery to engine block.

I think the additional earth strap should go to the starter motor, this may not be the issue though?

My 2010MY demonstrated similar behaviours, almost always in a busy car park. I never realised until the car was half out of the bay on tick over Neutral

I think it was eventually decided that I was hitting the start button before the pre-start systems check was complete and thus not much worked. The dead instrument pack was the giveaway every time. A switch off and restart always did the trick and the problem was very random too.

Possibly Fuses and Relays


Happy Nomad,

I had a similar problem to yours.

My LR2 would occasionally run very rough and sometimes it would not power up the instrument cluster and the entertainment system.

To fix it I did two things.

1. I replaced all of the fuses in the fuse box next to the engine and the fuses under the glove box (see the picture of what my fuse looked like)

2. I replaced the relays shown in the picture

Everything was very inexpensive.


I haven't been able to get my car to run rough any more.

And I've tried by using my thumb to dock the key and my finger to press the start button as quickly as possible.

Note: the relays in the picture that I replaced are for turning on the starter motor and for switching on power to the other fuse box (this box is where the instrument cluster and the entertainment system get their power)

Thanks Paul... If I'd known that at the time... I no longer have that car so for me, the problem went away. Hopefully the current owner isn't being troubled by it though.

I replaced the relays as shown with no improvement.

I really enjoy this car but 2 issues driving me up the wall is the gear/battery light and bad fuel consumption!

Ours did the same yesterday.
Started engine put in drive car moved forwards a couple of meters then stopped and wouldn't respond to throttle, RPM lower than usual tickover and battery light was on, put it in neutral rpm went up to normal tickover light went off. All back to normal without needing a restart.
I've noticed on one post on here that there was an update for this that related to the RPM being low and the system thinking the engine is not running but for me the RPM did rise when I set off then it was as if I had come off the throttle and applied just enough brake to stop it moving. Mine, Saab convertible
