The downside of budget tyres - Time for a change

Since I bought the Golf in April, I've been running around on the tyres it came with (plenty of tread) and they are budget tyres. 2 are Kumho which sell for around £35 and I can't recall the brand of the other 2.

In the heavy rain yesterday, I was driving slowly up to a mini roundabout with plenty of space between me and the car in front when the car in front braked heavily as a cat dashed out. I braked heavily (ish) and got that horrible judder through the pedal that you tend to get when you brake on snow.

At such low speed, these tyres felt unsafe really and they don't inspire confidence at speed. I am going to invest in some Michelin CrossClimates which are a winter tyre adapted to be good in summer. So an all season tyre but the only one to carry the snowflake symbol for official winter rating and no need to change over twice a year and worry about storage. Epic reviews Thumbs Up

Well, the cross climates have an 'A' wet grip rating which is based solely on grip when braking in the wet and you can't get any better than that so should suit your needs fine. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Indeed. With many people acknowledging the benefits of winter tyres but not wanting the hassle of changing and storage, these are being hailed as a game changer. Plus, if we have a mild winter its no problem either. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I'm not sure Kumho tyres are now classed as budget, though they are cheaper than the more well known European makes despite their country or continent of manufacture. They are fitted to Hyundai cars as OEM fit, they were extremely hard wearing and 35-40K miles are not unknown on the Santa Fe even driven fairly enthusiastically ( the enthusiasm is constrained by grip) it is a fact of life that hard wearing and high mpg equals poor wet weather performance and early ABS actuation. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Guys, I've ordered the full set Thumbs Up so now I want your opinions on how much I could fetch for the old tyres. I don't know precisely how much tread is left but there is plenty.

2 of the tyres are Kumho EcoWing and 2 are Cooper CS2. You can pick them up new in the region of £35-£45 each. Would £80 for the lot be a reasonable proposition? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Doc, you can get part-worn tyres of that size fitted for £20 each down this way so if you were asking £20 each and if yours have to be collected, fitted and balanced, you might have trouble shifting them. I'd start at £50 for the lot, collected, and take whatever you can get.

BTW, most places charge at least £1.50 per tyre for 'environmental tyre casing disposal'. Make sure they don't charge you that if you are taking them away. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I only ever bought one set of "Budget" tyres for my Mazda 3, they were Quickfits own and were useless and wore down in no time at all.

No such thing as budget tyres, unless your going to sell the car immediately. North Wales Land Rover Club
