Sat Nav rant.

I have recently returned from a trip to Longleat, legoland, Peterborough and Harrogate and found the sat nav to be a complete pain in the Censored !!!!!

On travelling up the M4 towards the M25 to get up to Peterborough it decided to take me off at Reading. Not being familiar with the area i thoght the sat nav must know a dinky shortcut through Reading and obeyed it. 1 hour later towing a caravan through the middle of Reading it got me back onto the M4 and then a few miles later wanted to take me to Slough. I ignored it this time and it knocked 20 minutes off my eta at peterborough. When we then got to the M25 junction with the A1 it wanted me to go up the M11 and cut back over to the A1 higher up, again when i ignored this the journey was shortened by 40 miles and the arrival time by nearly an hour. I didn't have the auto reroute function set for traffic problems and it never came up with and slow traffic warning or the like.

A few days later on the M74 near Glasgow it then wanted to take me of a slip road round the roundabout and back down the slip road onto the M74 again. Given my previous experinces i again ignored this.

I have done nearly 40k miles now and not had a similar problem before and have used the sat nav regularly.

Maybe it was just bored with motorways and wanted to do some sight seeing or the credit crunch is hitting the satelites as well.

Has anybody else had a similar experience and found out why?

i had a similar experiance going up to scotland

took me off the motorway through shopping centre high street and a industrial estate and back on to the same road Shocked

Many times it wants to take me off and back on a motorway Shocked

route preview is the way to go, especially when your towing a caravan

I often check a route out with a map, especially long routes and place waypoint in to make sure it goes the way i want too Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

you don't have that option on the LR satnav Big Cry

just a choice of 3 routes, that are just slightly different, normally give a ETA about 5 minutes apart Rolling Eyes Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Agreed I found sat nav great for finding actual street address, but as a route finder its pretty hopeless At work

My NAV SAT works perfectly - always finds exactly the route I need Thumbs Up It also finds routes on unsealed mountain tracks Thumbs Up

However there are not many roads to choose from here and hardly any motorways Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I've got a nokia N95 8gb Phone with nav on it, trouble is, even along the M6 most of the time it says 'NOT ON A ROAD' and I can be on a main A road, it will pin point a position in open countryside and say I'M within 3000 Meters of said point-what a load of crap!

The OP is right. Mine regularly tries to take me off the A-roads and go through the town centres, only to emerge back on the original A-Road. It is a fundamental flaw with the system.

Try this. Travel clockwise round the M25 and set the Nav to go to Ipswich. It will try and take you off up the M11 (nope - thats very wrong), ignore the turnoff, and go up the A12 as you should. Get to the Colchester area and it will take you off the A12 through the town centre and then back on to the A12. Huh! Censored

And then try to go to Woodbridge, the other side of Ipswiich. It will take you off the A12, through the town centre of Ipswich, and then back on to the A12 Big Cry

This is just one of many examples.

IMHO, its because the system tries to go the shortest/direct route, and not other options such as the quickest etc as most other systems do. It is not configurable either way.

The system is one of those where you have to prep the night before and ignore the stupid things it tries to do. Chris

I have experienced that SAT Nav want me from the west side of the Oslofjord to the east side (tunnel or ferry) when I was on the way from Kristiansand to Oslo. Oslo is the innermost of the fjord. Idiotic order. LR Freelander2 2,2 Td4 HSE manuel Stornaway Grey (Metallic) & Ebony Black Leather & Sun/Moon-roof & Bi-Xenon & Roof Rails & Tow bar & Body side rubbing strips & Cold climate pack & Privacy glass & NavTeq .
