Freelander 2 rear Wheel bearing replacement

Hi,

Can anyone advise on replacing a rear wheel bearing on a 2011 Diesel Freelander 2.

I have worked out that I need to:

Remove the rear wheel,
Remove the spline screw,
Remove the dust cover to access the handbrake adjuster inside the hub,
Adjust the handbrake thus allowing the hub to be removed,
Remove the brake caliper,
Remove the disk/drum,
Knock the tab out of the tab washer,
Remove the nut and then I hope to be able to remove the hub.

My question is about the placement of the bearing, will removing the hub assembly (as described above) allow me access to the bearing for replacement, or will the bearing still be on, or around the half shaft necessitating me to remove the half shaft.

I have never done this on a Freelander, but I have a lot of experience with my MGs, Jaguars and other cars I have owned in past.

I don' want to sound patronising but ae you sure you have a wheel bearing problem? One of our FL2s was making a wheel bearing type noise so when it went in for a service I asked them to have a look. The dealer said definitely a rear wheel bearing, book it in and we will change it under warranty. So I booked it in and then I had a call to say that it wasn't the bearing after all, it was tyre noise so I put two new tyres on and the noise had gone.
Would have been cheaper if it had been a wheel bearing. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Haven't done a FL2 bearing but looking at pictures of bearings online, they appear to be solid ones so with this type of setup I'd say you need to first smash out the flange (which will probably leave a part of the bearing still on it). You'll need to remove this carefully. You'll then need to press the rest of the bearing out of the hub. Refitting is the reversal of removal but you must remember to support the rear inner bearing race when pressing the flange back on. Fairly easy if you have the right tools. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

I can confirm that is the wheel bearing as we have swapped the tyres around to confirm that it is not tyres.

As I say, I am concerned that I don't want to start taking the bearing apart to find that getting the bearing out will require that I need to remove the half shaft.

It is a relatively straight forward job if you have the right gear.

You will need a decent press to remove/install the brg in the hub + a decent torque wrench.

I found this the most difficult/time consuming part, as I had to make a tool for the job.

Nick,

Thanks for the reply. I think that I have all the tools, as I say looking after my Jaguar XJS, a Mark 2, an MGB GT, an MGA and plenty of other daily cars, I have a good selection of bits.

From what you say, I get the feeling that I may have to take the entire hub off to get the bearing out and a new one in?

As you suggest, I will look at the handbrake assembly first to ensure that I can get that apart.

Thanks.

Garreth.

Garreth,

Yes you need the hub off the vehicle to be able to press the old brg out, as the bearing remains in the hub when you slide it off the driveshaft. Mine slid off easily, also make sure you fit the new brg the correct way round, with the magnet facing inboard, easy to get wrong!

Cheers,
