I lost my Freelander 2 key fob (2007). Land Rover dealer told me that my spare key somehow is not recognized by my car. I couldn't belive that they are not able to replace the fob without having the spare one. I was quated £1700 for creating new key as they said they need to replace something else in the car to get new fob. It is outrageous that Land Rover could make such a system. In the scenario when you lose your only key abroad on holiday, what would be the solution ?

The spare key just doesn't work or the battery is flat ?

When I have hired a car in Europe it comes with one key. I always tie a length of orange fluorescent strip/ribbon around it & then hang the key around my neck. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Those keys are a couple of hundred pounds each, it never ceases to amaze me how lax folk are with them, especially young mums who give their little angels the things to chew on.

& when they are finished drop the key in their babyccino! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

How long does the key need to be used to be sure it is fully charged. Mine, Saab convertible

Hi, I was advised to swap them every six months by the dealer when I bought mine.

I just swap them on the first of every month (appx). As far as I know mine are original keys, almost all of the white paint is worn off, and are now over nine years old. No problems.

Reading some threads on repairing them, the main issue is dropping them which can shear the battery tags soldered to the circuit board inside.

there is so much junk on Mrs G's key ring that if we lost it Nasa could probably spot it from space for us, i find it completely unusable

The reason I asked is because at the moment the spare only gets used when I borrow her Freelander to go fishing but not every time so it averages about 30 mins a week in the slot with the engine running. As both are in use we would rather not have to worry about swapping them over twice a year. Will 30 min a week be enough or should we also use it a few times a year for weekend trips when it will be charging for 7 or 8 hrs. Mine, Saab convertible

Hi, why not swap the keys over from keyring to keyring every couple of months. That way they would both stay charged.

Sorry just reread your post. I would think 30 mins every 6 months would not be enough. It is charged via an inductive coupling like some mobiles. More of a slow top up really. I think you should be swapping over every few months or so.

I'm sure I read that they are only needed to be used for 30 mins per month to keep them in good condition. That is only for the remote door operation surely? A totally 'dead' key will still be drawn into the docking slot and allow the engine to start on the button as the chip is not voltage dependant, is it?

Hi, thats how I understand it. Even with a flat key battery you should be able to use the built in metal key to gain access and start car.

Mt Remote fob is dead but does not get drawn into the dash
It is over 8 years since it was used, I have put a new battery in and it still does not get drawn into the dash.
My thoughts are that it could have been Barred by the factory when I got a new one,....anyone got ideas.
Going to get it tested on Tuesday to see if it is transmitting a signal but I fear it may have been wiped out.
Also, does the engine have to be running for a Fob in the Dash to take a charge? Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.
