Cost of a brake fluid change

OK, let's play a game of brake fluid change charges bingo. I'll start the ball rolling with the "deal" from my local LR dealer ("it's usually over £100, sir").

Quoted £75 to do it at the same time as a B service.

Anyone beat that?

Now that's interesting as the £75 I was quoted was from ... Hunters in Norwich

How much fluid does a full change need? I have 5 litres of DOT 4 in the workshop that I never got round to putting in the old Disco.

You can do it maybe 10 times over with 5 litres.

If its old stock and not in a sealed container its possible only fit for the bin. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Cost me a tenner to bleed myself. More success doing that than the Haldex fluid. Big Cry FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Pagid fluid bought towards the end of last year and not been opened.

Being a bit pedantic here but unless you need to use the jam later the jar doesn't need to be empty. Shocked 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I was amazed that when they did my brake fluid change they managed to do it without removing the rubber dustcaps on the bleed nipples.

I actually don't think they did it at all, but hard to prove.

Dropped the FL2 off this morning (currently driving around in a poncey Ewok).

Asked them again about the cost, told me £75 again. I told them to go online onto their own service booking system (the service assistant had never actually been on their own website – doh!) and showed him where it says £49, so they agreed to do it for that. Now I wonder how I can check if it was done...

I also asked them to investigate an electrical whine in the cockpit when accelerating/decelerating between 25mph and 40mph, and check the PDC sensors as they'd been playing up. Called me a while ago to say they think they can hear the whine, but it'll be £99 to plug the diagnostics in, which they'd have to do for the PDC anyway. Told them to go whistle. The reason I go to any 'specialist' is because they know the cars more than I do, and (one hopes) can in most cases identify the likely cause of an issue without to resort to the computer every time. And anyway, I resent paying £100 for someone to plug a cable in and press a few buttons to get a list of fault codes. Don't know why they're called 'service' really – just another sales department trying to get more money out of you.

Let's see what they try when I pick it up tonight, but fixed price servicing or not, I think it'll be going to my indy LR guy in the future.

I suppose that someone has to pay for the diagnostic kit and software. My local indie claims that it costs him a few £k a year for the diagnostic kit and software updates.

Reminds me of a story my son told me when he worked for BP. They had a big problem with some oil recovery installation which they couldn't sort out so they eventually called in a guy who helped design it who now worked as a freelance. He spent a couple of days looking at the problem then came on site and went up to a large valve and put a chalk cross on it and said "that's your problem". He then sent an invoice for £50k. When they challenged it he said it was 2p for the chalk and £49,999.98 for knowing where to put the chalk mark. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
