Hi All,

I had my car serviced today and the mechanic said that there was some oil leaking a pipe leading away from the turbo into the intercooler. He had to rush off and said to call him Monday to get the full story. My mechanic isn't a LR dealer but a friend BTW.

Being inpaitent I pulled the bash plate off from underneath the engine this morning and found half of it very oily and dirty.



Looking upwards from underneath the engine there is a pipe that runs from the trubo down underneath the engine to the front and into the intercooler.

My old Mitsubishi Pajero had a similar problem.
It turned out to be the EGR valve (exhaust gar recirculation) valve had stuck or leaked or something and had to be cleaned up.

Might not be the case here though of course, don't even know if the FL has one!

Mine has recently started leaking a little oil, and makes a strange whirring kinda noise.

I'm taking it into the garage on Firday, I'll let you know if it's the same thing.

Now I think about it my turbo did make a rattling noise during low revs a couple of weeks ago. I'll mention this to the dealer as well. 2007 TD4 SE

You'd be unlucky for the source to be the turbo, although ts common enough on chavy racer boy cars with oil filled foam air filters fitted as they dry out and dirt and grit then goes straight through to wreck the impellers.

Would have thought more likely to be coming from the air recirc circuit upstream of the turbo, maybe the EGR valve as previously suggested? 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky

My car is in with the dealer at the moment, for the oil leak. They said it was an oil seal (haven't asked which one yet) that needed replacing.

Got a call after they had the car for half a day, to say that after further investigation they need the car for at least 4 days to replace the seal. I'm slightly nervous as too how much of my engine is currently not attached to my car, if it takes 4 days to replace. I'd guess that a LR dealer could pretty much dismantle and rebuild the engine in 4 days. If I'm feeling brave, I'll ask them when I collect it next week.

On the plus side, I've got Disco 3 for the whole time, which I've wanted to have a proper drive of for a while, perhaps a little offroad trip is in order. Had it for 2 days so far, and I have to say that there are some things I like a lot more in the D3, but there are also loads of stuff I loke loads more on the FL2. Not sure yet which one I'd have if I could afford both.

Aren't you tempted to drive past the garage and have a look inside to see what stage of dismantleness your motor is in?

Very, but they like to hide their workshop out the back. and you can't see into it, unless they take you out back. You can't even drive past the doors.

I took the car into the dealers and they said that oil in the output pipe from the turbo is normal and that the join between the pipe and the intercooler hadn't been made properly so the oil was able to leak out from there.

I called another dealer to confirm that oil in the pipe is OK and was told that a small amount should be blown through by the turbo. He was concerned when I described the size of the oil stain on the bash plate and suggested I monitor the oil level every 100km. 2007 TD4 SE

OMG... I'm sorry but that is just nuts!!! Isn't that what you do when you are driving a 30yr old FJ40 done 300,000klm??? ______________________________
